Upcoming Civil War events
Tennesseans who own Civil War artifacts can learn how to preserve them and have them documented by the Tennessee State Library and Archives at events across the state this year. In 28 counties, the project, Looking Back: The Civil War in Tennessee, has documented more than 7,000 items in the past year, from muskets to surgeon kits. For more information, visit www.tn.gov/tsla/cwtn.
Upcoming Looking Back events will take place in Sparta (March 23), in Shiloh (April 4) and in Carthage (May 11). The Battle of Shiloh commemoration, the state?s signature sesquicentennial event for 2012, is March 29 through April 8 at Shiloh National Military Park.
'An army in hurried retreat'
Dr. John Berrien Lindsley of Nashville kept a diary that described events leading up to the fall of Nashville.
On Feb. 17, 1862, his entry included this assessment:
"What I saw of Johnston's army today and yesterday fully equalled any description I have ever read of an army in hurried retreat before a superior force, whose fangs they must avoid."
