Oral Contraceptives Can Increase Estrogen Levels in the Water Supply or Food Chain, Potentially Leading to Increased Prostate Cancer Risks for Men
Prostate cancer is the most common male cancer in the developed world. And recent studies have suggested that exposure to estrogen can increase a man?s risks for prostate cancer. Following up on this finding, researchers at the University of Toronto devised a study into how the soaring use of oral contraceptives over the past 40 years might play a role.
Analyzing data from the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) and the United Nations? World Contraceptive Use 2007 report, experts looked at populations with a high incidence of prostate cancer and examined the types of contraception used in those areas. Compared to other forms of birth control, such as intra-uterine devices, condoms or vaginal barriers, oral contraceptives, which contain high doses of estrogen, were associated with high incidences of prostate cancer in a population.
Scientists theorized that by-products of oral contraceptives, excreted through urine, might contaminate the local environment, ending up in the water supply or food chain. In turn, men in these populations face an increased exposure to estrogen, which could explain the elevated number of prostate cancer cases and mortality.
While the study demonstrates a connection between a country?s use of oral contraceptives and its risks for prostate cancer, researchers acknowledge that confounding factors could have influenced the results. In fact, the study showed that countries with a high use of oral contraceptives also have higher rates of other risk factors for prostate cancer, which include poor diet, lack of exercise and smoking.
Medify, which has over 2,120 research abstracts on contraception alone, is on a mission to provide patients and their loved ones access to the best information online about their medical condition.
