(Crain's) ? Just their luck: As a record Mega Millions jackpot grew to $640 million, the Illinois Lottery's new website for online ticket sales crashed about 3:30 p.m. today.
It wasn't swamped by heavy volume but some unknown technical glitch, lottery officials said.
"It's not a question of volume ? volume hasn't been that high," Lottery Superintendent Michael Jones said.
As of 3 p.m. Friday, online sales totaled $243,649 for the day, about four times the amount of tickets bought at that point on Wednesday.
That compares with about $1.5 million an hour at traditional retail outlets statewide.
Technicians for Northstar Lottery Group, the private consortium that runs the lottery, were running diagnostics on the new website for online ticket sales, which started last Sunday.
The website was expected to be running again in a few minutes, according to a Northstar spokeswoman.
