Illinois Lottery website fails amid Mega Millions' record jackpot ...

(Crain's) ? Just their luck: As a record Mega Millions jackpot grew to $640 million, the Illinois Lottery's new website for online ticket sales crashed about 3:30 p.m. today.

It wasn't swamped by heavy volume but some unknown technical glitch, lottery officials said.

"It's not a question of volume ? volume hasn't been that high," Lottery Superintendent Michael Jones said.

As of 3 p.m. Friday, online sales totaled $243,649 for the day, about four times the amount of tickets bought at that point on Wednesday.

That compares with about $1.5 million an hour at traditional retail outlets statewide.

Technicians for Northstar Lottery Group, the private consortium that runs the lottery, were running diagnostics on the new website for online ticket sales, which started last Sunday.

The website was expected to be running again in a few minutes, according to a Northstar spokeswoman.

Green and clean car promotions begin to pay dividends | Ocean ...

Despite lingering consumer doubts about the technology and practicality of electric vehicles, the Chinese government and automakers are pushing ahead with the development of green cars.

Buyers of hybrid cars, which run on a combination of batteries and conventional engines, are entitled to a direct central government subsidy of 5,000 yuan ($790) per vehicle, while a rebate of up to 60,000 yuan on the purchase price is offered to buyers of battery-driven cars.

Other than government incentives, auto manufacturers are luring buyers of their alternative cars with free maintenance and a range of personalized services.

Their combined effort to promote greener cars on Chinese roads is beginning to pay off. A survey by the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers showed that 8,159 hybrid and electric cars were sold nationwide in 2011. All together, there are more than 10,000 green cars on China?s roads.

The energy conversion rate of electric vehicles in general is 46 percent higher than in internal combustion engine cars, and they have the potential to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by up to 68 percent, said Raymond Tsang, partner at Bain and Company.

The majority of early converts to green cars are college-educated young professionals in major cities. For instance, Zhao Yu, a 30-year-old office worker at Shanghai International Automobile City, in Jiading, a district of the Shanghai municipality, bought a hybrid car domestically produced by BYD ?to show support for my district?s reputation as the country?s showroom for energy-efficient cars?.

Jiading, home to Shanghai Automotive Industry Corporation (Group), one of China?s largest car manufacturers, considers itself a suitable testing ground for popularizing the use of clean cars.

All the promotions were making Zhao feel embarrassed every time she drove her gas-guzzling, pollution-belching, sinister-looking lump of a sedan to work every day. To repent, she spent 160,000 yuan in April last year to buy BYD?s new hybrid model, the F3DM, to drive to work and show her eco-friendly credentials.

To her surprise, buying the car has brought benefits that make her feel like a pampered child. For a start, she received close to a 40 percent, or 60,000 yuan, rebate from the central and local governments on the purchase price of her hybrid car. What?s more, she was told she could enjoy free battery recharge at stations sprouting in the city, compliments of the Jiading district government.

?I am still getting the hang of owning and driving a hybrid car,? she said. But the many incentives have removed any earlier doubts she had about the economic sense of buying one. ?I feel like I am one of the chosen few,? she said. That feeling, she added, ?makes me feel immensely proud of my decision?.

Zhao?s F3DM can go as far as 150 kilometers in hybrid mode, a range long enough to make the daily round trip from her home to the office and back. ?I never need to worry about running out of juice in the middle of nowhere,? she said.

In electric power mode, the batteries can sustain up to 90 minutes? driving, or 80 kilometers, before the gas engine takes over. ?I only need to recharge the batteries once every day, after I get to work,? Zhao said.

The good thing, Zhou added, is that her car is smooth and quiet. What?s more, it saves her quite a bit on fuel costs, compared to her other car, which she drives only on weekends.

?But the shortage of recharging stations outside Jiading has made it impractical to take my hybrid anywhere other than the office,? she said, sighing. Otherwise, she said, ?I would have sold my old car in a jiffy.?

China?s strategy to develop new energy cars has gained sufficient ground on many fronts. When coal imports began to exceed exports in 2009, the government saw the urgent need to reduce the country?s dependence on fossil fuels and launched a campaign to widen the use of alternative energy sources.

The country also faces the challenge of reducing greenhouse gas emissions in every sector of the economy. An area that has raised great concern is emissions caused by the explosive growth of the car population in the many sprawling urban districts. As a result, great emphasis has been placed on the development of green cars that can be widely accepted by consumers.

On the policy front, the development of the electric vehicle industry has been set as a priority of the Ministry of Science and Technology since 2001. The resulting ?863 Electric-Drive Fuel Cell Vehicle Project?, a State-level, high-tech development plan, received an initial investment of 800 million yuan, said Wang Tianwei, policy director of the policy coordination department of Jiading Auto City.

On the regulatory front, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology and the National Development and Reform Commission passed at least 20 new regulations in the past decade to regulate and promote wider use of hybrid and electric cars.

These combined efforts centered on a multiple of tax incentives to manufacturers as well as price subsidies to customers. The original target was to make the country a world leader in electric vehicles by putting 500,000 units on the road by 2011. But held back by technology constraints and policy coordination, the deadline has been extended to 2015.

Electric car pioneers, including SAIC, Chery and BYD Motors have indicated their commitment to the development of electric vehicle technologies. SAIC, for instance, is planning to introduce Roewe E50, an all-battery-powered vehicle with the latest technology, by late 2012.

The car, which produces zero emissions, has a range of 120 kilometers on a full charge, compared to about 80 km for the existing models.

According to Hu Maoyuan, SAIC chairman, the E50 is ?a result of the company?s efforts?, which he described as an example of ?indigenous innovation?. The company holds the patent and rights to all the key technologies it developed for this project.

To be sure, there are snags to overcome before hybrids and battery cars become a common sight on Chinese roads.

Battery performance remains the challenge to the practicality of electric vehicles. Wang said Chinese companies still lag far behind their competitors in the West and Japan in battery technology.

A study conducted by the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs said China holds just 1 percent of the total patent registrations for lithium ion batteries, while Japan owns 52 percent and the US owns 22 percent.

Tsang said he believed China has many advantages for developing electric vehicles, including availability and integration of resources, and strong government support.

Recent years have witnessed a major paradigm shift of computing from stationary devices called PC including desktop & laptop towards mobile devices. These mobile devices differ from traditional stationary devices in several major ways. Including from form factors, activities, inputs, outputs, sensors, networks, Eco-systems and software environments. One major shift is also seen in computer graphics technology. There are a lot of tutorials available which can give a broader view on this. Those courses have two major aims, technically and mentality. On the technical side, they emphasize both mobile and interactive aspects. They cover the practical aspects of mobile computing, including the Android platform that is not only popular but also open source. The development part will cover a variety of important subjects in computer science, including parallel computing platform, user interface, graphics, multimedia, network, sensors, database and software engineering, all wrapped up under a practical subjects on interactive mobile computing.
On the graphics end, the digital world is witnessing a major makeover. From the basic question of what is graphics card, we can see that there are now parallel computing platforms for mobile devices. NVIDIA plans to offer CUDA architecture on their upcoming Tegra System on a chip for mobile devices along with the all their offerings. And what is CUDA? It is a C language environment that aides software developers to write programs for solving complex computational problems using parallel processing power of multi core GPU. Having the knowledge of what is GPU, a new computer architecture based on GPUs and other types of parallel processors that work together with the conventional CPUs is emerging. The CPU is excellent for sequential processing, but there are many types of problems that we can operate on in parallel. NVIDIA is working with applications developers to port their software to the CUDA architecture. It has already made CUDA available for free. Pitt and MIT researchers accomplish first demonstration of oscillating gels that can be 'revived' by mechanical pressure

PITTSBURGHSooner than later, robots may have the ability to "feel." In a paper published online March 26 in Advanced Functional Materials, a team of researchers from the University of Pittsburgh and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) demonstrated that a nonoscillating gel can be resuscitated in a fashion similar to a medical cardiopulmonary resuscitation. These findings pave the way for the development of a wide range of new applications that sense mechanical stimuli and respond chemicallya natural phenomenon few materials have been able to mimic.

A team of researchers at Pitt made predictions regarding the behavior of Belousov-Zhabotinsky (BZ) gel, a material that was first fabricated in the late 1990s and shown to pulsate in the absence of any external stimuli. In fact, under certain conditions, the gel sitting in a petri dish resembles a beating heart.

Along with her colleagues, Anna Balazs, Distinguished Professor of Chemical and Petroleum Engineering in Pitt's Swanson School of Engineering, predicted that BZ gel not previously oscillating could be re-excited by mechanical pressure. The prediction was actualized by MIT researchers, who proved that chemical oscillations can be triggered by mechanically compressing the BZ gel beyond a critical stress. A video from the MIT group showing this unique behavior can be accessed at http://vvgroup.scripts.mit.edu/WP/?p=1078

"Think of it like human skin, which can provide signals to the brain that something on the body is deformed or hurt," says Balazs. "This gel has numerous far-reaching applications, such as artificial skin that could be sensorya holy grail in robotics."

Balazs says the gel could serve as a small-scale pressure sensor for different vehicles or instruments to see whether they'd been bumped, providing diagnostics for the impact on surfaces. This sort of developmentand materials like BZ gelare things Balazs has been interested in since childhood.

"My mother would often tease me when I was young, saying I was like a mimosa plant shy and bashful," says Balazs. "As a result, I became fascinated with the plant and its unique hide-and-seek qualitiesthe plant leaves fold inward and droop when touched or shaken, reopening just minutes later. I knew there had to be a scientific application regarding touch, which led me to studies like this in mechanical and chemical energy."

Also on Balazs's research team were Olga Kuksenok, research associate professor, and Victor Yashin, visiting research assistant professor, both in Pitt's Swanson School of Engineering. At MIT, the work was performed by Krystyn Van Vliet, Paul M. Cook Career Development Associate Professor of Material Sciences and Engineering, and graduate student Irene Chen. (Group Web site: http://vvgroup.scripts.mit.edu/WP/).

Pope to Mexico's children: Be messengers of peace

GUANAJUATO, Mexico (AP) ? Pope Benedict XVI reached out to the future of the church in Mexico on Saturday, telling a gathering of children to be messengers of peace in their often-violent country.

The pope reserved his only public remarks of the day for a gathering of about 4,000 children and their parents massed in Peace Plaza in the city of Guanajuato, telling them that they are each a "gift of God to Mexico and the world."

Referring indirectly to the drug-fueled violence plaguing Mexico, he urged them all to be messengers of peace.

"The disciple of Jesus does not respond to evil with evil, but is always an instrument of good instead, a herald of pardon, a bearer of happiness, a servant of unity," Benedict said. "I will pray for all of you, so that Mexico may be a place in which everyone can live in serenity and harmony."

"We're excited to hear his words, not just for this moment, but to carry in our lives and to know God better," said 17-year-old Fabiola Gonzalez, who traveled by bus with a group of 45 teenage girls from Guadalajara to the plaza. "We hope they will last more than this week."

Benedict was interrupted several times by the cheering crowd that had gathered hours beforehand for an intimate encounter with the 84-year-old pope on one of his few public outings in Mexico.

Tens of thousands, many of them teenagers, watched his remarks on big screen televisions in a nearby pilgrim camp at the site of the papal Mass planned for Sunday. The atmosphere was like a rock concert as the TVs showed the pope emerging on a balcony in nearby Guanajuato, with campers letting go a roaring chant of "Benedicto, Benedicto."

The focus on youth fits with the Vatican's drive to re-evangelize parts of the world where Roman Catholicism has fallen by the wayside, trying to rally the next generation to embrace a faith that their parents may have abandoned. While Europe has certainly been Benedict's focus to date, Mexico also has seen its number of Catholics fall.

"The Mexican church feels like it's lost a few generations of Catholics," said Joseph Palacios, a professor of Latin American studies at Georgetown University, citing the battles over liberation theology that drove many left-leaning Catholics away. To get back its numbers, the Mexican church is "moving forward with the new generation," he said.

Even as Benedict was receiving a rapturous welcome from young Catholics, his first full day in Mexico was not without criticism ? particularly concerning the church's treatment of children and sexual abuse.

Victims of the late Marcial Maciel on Saturday launched a new book containing documents on the Vatican's alleged cover-up of sexual abuse of seminarians by Maciel, who founded the Legionaries of Christ. Questions about the Vatican's handling of Maciel and his victims have grown in the lead-up to Benedict's arrival.

Benedict took over the Legion in 2010 after the order finally admitted that Maciel had molested seminarians and fathered three children with two women. The documentation in the new book, said author Jose Barba, one of the victims, demonstrates that the Vatican had information against Maciel as early as 1944 and particularly in the mid-1950s, when the Holy See launched its first investigation into the Mexican-born Maciel.

Alberto Athie, former priest and one of three co-authors of "The Desire Not to Know," called on Benedict to publicly recognize the church's responsibility for Maciel's abuse.

"The church won't fall. On the contrary, it will be reconstructed," he said.

The pope did not talk about this abuse scandal in his limited remarks.

At the entrance to Guanajuato, Benedict received the keys to the city and then traveled by popemobile past faithful crowded along the cobblestone streets of the historic colonial-era city, which was the birthplace of Mexican independence and an armed uprising against harsh anti-clerical laws in the 1920s.

People packed narrow streets, balconies and rooftops and cheered wildly even as it started to sprinkle. Children and teenagers ran through crowds as Benedict passed to catch another glimpse of him. At one point, someone handed him a baby through an open window of the bulletproof popemobile. He kissed the baby and an aide passed the child back.

As he left his residence in the city of Leon in late afternoon for his meeting with President Felipe Calderon in Guanajuato, Benedict went out of his way to bless dozens of babies handed up to him by their parents. While such gestures are routine papal fare, Benedict seemed to zero in on the children in the crowd.

"We young people are getting closer to the church and to God, instead of getting closer to drugs and violence," said Juan Daniel Pacheco, 18, of Apaseo el Grande in Guanajuato state as he sought shade with his friends at one of the campgrounds that were quickly filling with faithful arriving for Sunday's Mass. "We are young people who will be able to change Mexico."

Benedict has taken up Pope John Paul II's drive to reach out to young Catholics, following in his footsteps by rallying millions of young faithful to join him for World Youth Days, the Catholic youth festivals held once every three years. The next edition is scheduled for Rio de Janiero.

He awoke to the pre-dawn serenade of two dozen youths from a Guadalajara church group who sang him a traditional folk song after getting as close as security would allow to the college in Leon where the pontiff is staying during his three-day visit to Mexico.

"We sang with all our heart and all our force," said Maria Fernanda de Luna, a member of the group. "It gave us goose bumps to sing 'Las Mananitas' for him."

Of the 43.5 million Mexicans under age 20, 36.2 million are Catholic, or 83.2 percent, just under the national average. The largest group of Mexicans overall are children aged 5 to 9 ? a prime target for Benedict's efforts to rebuild a church that has fallen victim to the same secular trends that have emptied churches across Europe.

Benedict will greet tens of thousands of young faithful Sunday, when he celebrates Mass in the enormous Bicentennial Park.

The weeklong trip to Mexico and Cuba is Benedict's first to both countries, and only his second to Latin America. He visited Brazil in 2007.

Many said the pope's message of peace and unity would help heal their country, traumatized by the deaths of more than 47,000 people in a drug war that has escalated during a government offensive against cartels that began at the end of 2006.

Teens on Saturday said the damage of violence and drug use emphasized the importance of staying on a religious path.

"I've been drawn closer to all that is spiritual because it helps me in life," said Carla Patricia Maldonado Moreno, 15, of nearby Celaya. "I know I'm not going to surrender to whatever obstacle."

Pilgrims streamed into the camps from all over Mexico and as far away as Phoenix, Arizona.

Paula Zazueta traveled 40 hours by bus from Phoenix with 43 people, who first went to Mexico City to see the shrine of the Virgin of Guadalupe and later to the camp in Silao to await the Mass.

"The blessings he will give us are important," said Zazueta, who owns a video production company.

"It is faith that moves us," said Alejandra Angoa, 34, a handicrafts-maker from the state of Tlaxcala. She walked alongside people of all ages carrying sleeping bags, coolers, backpacks, rolling suitcases and jugs of water.

Marcela Perez, 35, was exhausted after the trek and huddled in the only shade she could find alongside a portable toilet. But she did not regret coming.

"I think it's worth it," she said. "He is the head, the rock for us who have been baptized, for the church. It's a unique experience."

I have to tell you that your work crew, Sam and his partner, were the best!? They carried all four windows up our

extremely long, steep driveway on a very cold January day, along with all of their tools, supplies, etc., and they had

smiles on their faces.? They made sure everything went smoothly without any incident or bad outcome.? They

were pleasant and very happy to do it (even though I have them the option to come back).? We are totally happy

Twin suicide blasts kill dozens in Syrian capital

DAMASCUS, Syria (AP) ? Two suicide bombers detonated cars packed with explosives in near-simultaneous attacks on heavily guarded intelligence and security buildings in the Syrian capital Damascus Saturday, killing at least 27 people.

There have been a string of large-scale bombings against the regime in its stronghold of Damascus that suggest a dangerous, wild-card element in the year-old anti-government revolt. The regime blamed the opposition, which denied having a role or the capabilities to carry out such a sophisticated attack. And after other similar attacks, U.S. officials suggested al-Qaida militants may be joining the fray.

The early morning explosions struck the heavily fortified air force intelligence building and the criminal security department, several miles apart in Damascus, at approximately the same time, the Interior Ministry said. Much of the facade of the intelligence building appeared to have been ripped away.

State-run news agency SANA said a third blast went off near a military bus at the Palestinian refugee camp Yarmouk in Damascus, killing the two suicide bombers.

"All our windows and doors are blown out," said Majed Seibiyah, 29, who lives in the area of one of the blasts. "I was sleeping when I heard a sound like an earthquake. I didn't grasp what was happening until I heard screaming in the street."

The first explosion around 7 a.m. targeted the air force intelligence building in the residential district of al-Qassaa, a predominantly Christian area. It caused destruction in a 100-meter (yard) radius, shattering windows, blowing doors off their hinges and throwing chairs and other furniture off balconies.

State TV aired gruesome images of the scene, with mangled and charred corpses, bloodstained streets and twisted steel.

It carried interviews with the wounded in hospital.

"Is this the assistance promised by Qatar and Saudi Arabia?" asked one of the injured.

The two Gulf powerhouses have been fiercely critical of the Syrian government's crackdown on dissent and have been discussing military aid to the rebels. The U.N. says well over 8,000 have died since the uprising began a year ago, inspired by Arab Spring revolts across the Middle East and North Africa.

A string of previous blasts that struck the capital, also suicide bombings, have killed dozens of people since December.

The government has blamed the explosions on the "terrorists" that it claims are behind the uprising. The opposition has denied any role, saying they believe forces loyal to the government are behind the bombings in a plot to tarnish the uprising.

But top U.S. intelligence officials also have pointed to al-Qaida in Iraq as the likely culprit behind the previous bombings, raising the possibility its fighters are infiltrating across the border to take advantage of the turmoil.

Al-Qaida's leader called for President Bashar Assad's ouster in February.

A previously unknown Islamist group calling itself Al-Nusra Front to Protect the Levant claimed responsibility for the previous attacks in a video posted online, saying it carried them out "to avenge the people of Homs." Homs is an opposition stronghold in central Syria that has been hard-hit in the government crackdown.

Al-Qaida's involvement could further fuel the sectarian tensions that the uprising has already stoked. Al-Qaida's supporters are largely Sunni Muslim extremists.

Syria's military and political leadership is stacked heavily with members of the minority Alawite sect, an offshoot of Shiite Islam to which Assad and the ruling elite belong. The Alawite leaders of Syria are closely allied with Shiite Iran.

Sunnis are the majority in the country of 22 million and make up the backbone of the opposition.

A suspected al-Qaida presence creates new obstacles for the U.S., its Western allies and Arab states trying to figure out a way to help push Assad from power. If al-Qaida does interfere, it may also rally Syrian religious minorities, fearful of Sunni radicalism, to get behind the regime.

The blasts also raised questions about how suicide car bombers were able to penetrate high-security areas in Damascus. Since the first suicide bombings struck the capital in December, the government has taken exceptional measures around state security and other government institutions and ministries, putting up thick concrete blast walls and checkpoints and guards checking drivers' IDs.

Bassma Kodmani, a Paris-based member of the opposition Syrian National Council, said she doubted the armed groups trying to bring Assad down by force, such as the rebel Free Syrian Army, have the capacity to carry out such attacks on security institutions in the capital.

"I don't think any of the opposition forces or the Free Syrian Army has the capacity to do such an operation to target these buildings because they are fortresses," she said by telephone. "They are very well guarded. There is no way anyone can penetrate them without having strong support and complicity from inside the security apparatus."

The rebel Free Syrian Army, the most powerful armed opposition force, has appealed for the international community to send weapons to help it fight the regime, but so far, no countries are heeding the call. The U.S. and others have not advocated arming the rebels, in part out of fear it would create an even more bloody and prolonged battle.

Though the Syrian uprising began as mostly peaceful protests, it has becoming increasingly militarized, pushing the country to the brink of civil war.

An Interior Ministry statement tied the latest explosions to "the recent escalation by regional and international parties, and their open calls for sending weapons to Syria."

The morning attacks caused panic on the streets. Shooting broke out soon after the blasts and sent residents and others who had gathered in the area fleeing, an Associated Press reporter at the scene said.

The last major suicide bombing was on Feb. 10, when twin blasts struck security compounds in the government stronghold of Aleppo in northern Syria, killing 28 people. Damascus has seen three suicide previous bombings since December, hitting intelligence and security buildings.

The government uses the attack to reinforce its claim that this is not a popular uprising, blaming foreign extremists and gangs trying to destroy the country.

In recent weeks, Syrian forces have waged a series of heavy offensives against the main strongholds of the opposition ? Homs in the center, Idlib in the north and Daraa in the south.

The Local Coordination Committees, a key activist group, said 22 people were killed across the country Saturday, including eight in the northwestern city of Raqqa where clashes were reported between the military and army defectors, and five in Idlib.

Diplomatic efforts to solve the crisis have so far brought no result. But U.N. envoy Kofi Annan told the Security Council in a briefing Friday that he would return to Damascus even though his recent visit and talks with Assad saw no progress in attempts to cobble together negotiations.

Both Assad and much of the opposition spurned Annan's appeal for talks.

Syria told Annan in a letter obtained by the AP Saturday that it is "keen to end violence" but insists that armed opposition groups must give up their weapons first.

The Syrian response falls far short of U.S. and European demands that regime forces stop fighting first ? and even Russia's insistence that both sides stop fighting simultaneously. But it does leave open the door for talks, and Annan is sending a team to Damascus on Sunday to continue efforts on implementing his proposal.

The Road to Be In Good Shape Is Low Carb Diet Plan | New Health ...

New Health And Fitness.Org - Health Information You Can Use

?Other people have a foolish manner of not minding, or act as if they are not minding what they eat. For my part, I always mind my tummy meticulously and very diligently; for I look upon it that a person who does not mind his belly barely minds anything else.?- Samuel Johnson

Our body is a piece of property that only we have the full authority over to do whatever we like with it. Having said that, we must achieve wellness by eating the right food to keep our body in top shape. Losing weight is easier with the help of the latest innovations in health and fitness but the tricky part is keeping that weight. This is very challenging especially when you are being surrounded by those mouth watering and irresistible temptations. Eating is considered the most important part of our daily activity and we should always enjoy each moment while doing it. There is no more important activity than eating and we should always dedicate a certain time to do it no matter how important our work is.

However, let us not take for granted the fact that what we eat is actually vital for our body. We need to take into account how much calories and fats we take in. Good thing, there are fat burning foods available to give us a hand. These foods can help you burn fats, lose weight and get in shape in no time.

A low carb diet plan has components referred to as reverse calories. When you take in fatty foods, the low cab diet will make the food less fattening before it gets accumulated and stored in the body, thus, making it less fatty. Some people will starve themselves purposely to lose weight, however, you don?t need to do that by making use of a low carb diet plan. The best example of a fat burning food is lean meat. It helps the body burn its own fat and does not add extra calories. Lean meat stimulates the production of glucagon, a quick dissolving hormone. Glucagon affects the release of fat from an inside fat store so that the fat disappears. We are always advised to eat a lot of fruits and vegetables because these foods are considered fat burning foods. Fat burning foods as part of a low carb diet plan must be included in your daily diet.

Our sole duty to ourselves is keeping our body in good condition. Our overall health must be our top priority and being physically attractive will just follow. Looks are just a bonus for staying in shape when you maintain an ideal weight. Your body will have a strong immune system that prevents disease and health problems from occurring. The best way to do that is to include a low carb diet plan in your meals every day. Unconsciously as you continue to have this balanced and healthy diet you will feel far better while in the process lose weight gradually.

Low carb diet plans are not as tasty as mouth watering foods, however, they promise you something that these fancy foods can?t- wellness and a promising life ahead.

Dividend-paying stocks: more gains ahead

Dividend-paying stocks have room to grow, says BlackRock's CIO. One reason: Investors dissatisfied with low returns on their savings will be lured by the higher payouts of dividend-paying stocks.

Dividend investing has momentum and room to grow ? possibly even faster than earnings this year ? despite low payout ratios as companies hoard cash, Chris Leavy,?BlackRock?CIO, told CNBC Thursday.

?Leavy, who advises on?BlackRock?s?$275 billion in actively managed equities, attributes his optimism to three things: inflows of only $22 billion last year, compared with more than $100 billion for the past three years for bonds; companies making 12 to 14 times earnings and paying out reasonable dividends; and the growing number of investors dissatisfied with the low interest rate on their savings.

Leavy said a reasonable dividend means you don?t necessarily have to reach for the highest yields possible. ?You want an above-average dividend yield, but you really want to focus on dividend growth,? Leavy said. ?Most people are going to have a very long retirement. [With] a fixed coupon ? that purchasing power isn?t going to grow.?

?He also advises investors to avoid companies with over-leveraged balance sheets. Leavy?s top picks include global consumer companies like?Coca-Cola. Investors ?can ride the growth of the middle class in some of the emerging economies,? he said.

And despite recent cuts, the firm believes dividend payout ratios in the financial sector will go on the rise,?as is the case?with?JPMorgan Chase.

?The best protection against dividend cutters is to really focus on the long-term growth of the dividends,? Leavy said. ?That way you have some margin of safety.?

He noted that the ideal portfolio would include a combination of high-yield, lower-quality bonds and high-quality stocks, whose long-term growth rates are still ?compelling.?

Yesterday, we took a look at the growing comfort consumers, specifically gamers, have with purchasing virtual goods and currency on the Web and mobile devices. Virtual goods are becoming a booming market thanks to the growing maturity of gaming platforms, free-to-play models and the profusion of mobile devices.

Today, international investment firm Digi-Capital published its in-depth review of the global gaming space, giving us a sense of the size, breadth, and activity of the very international gaming market last year that is contributing to the changing behavior around virtual commerce ? as well as a glimpse into what we can expect from the industry over the course of 2012.

For starters, Digi-Capital found that gaming investment and M&A more than doubled in 2011, as private placements grew by 96 percent to $2 billion, the number of transactions increased by 67 percent to 152, and the average fundraising round increased by 17 percent to $13 million. When combined with the enormous IPOs of Zynga and Nexon, investment value nearly quadrupled. All in all, gaming M&A volume grew 88 percent to 113 transactions, value grew 160 percent to $3.4 billion, and the average M&A deal size grew 38 percent to $30.4 million.

In terms of which gaming sectors saw the most investment and M&A activity in 2011? Unsurprisingly, social and casual games took home the bacon, making up 57 percent of private investment and 45 percent of M&A activity. Digi-Capital believes that Zynga?s IPO was likely the ?high water mark for Social Games 1.0,? as the crowded nature of the space will make it increasingly difficult for companies to sustain user acquisition and retention.

In analyzing global gaming in terms of total daily active users and individual game daily active users, the investment firm found that a small number of companies are delivering on the promise of maintaining (and growing) their user bases, specifically referencing Wooga and King.com. However, with the trend beginning in 2011, this year will likely see continued consolidating M&A activity in gaming.

Second to social and casual gaming in terms of transaction volume was social/mobile games, with 30 percent of private investment and 27 percent of M&A activity, although the value of private investment hasn?t really hit its full potential yet. Digi cited DeNA and Gree as two examples of how investment in social-mobile games can actually deliver ROI, with the former seeing more than $1.4 billion in revenues at a 50 percent operating margin, and the latter seeing equivalent revenues in the 12 months leading up to December 2011, with a 46 percent operating margin. Going forward, mobile-social and cross-platform games will continue to attract significant attention from both investors and potential acquirers.

And just as we wrote in April last year, large, profitable Chinese, Japanese, and South Korean gaming companies will continue to look for M&A opportunities in North America, as gaming continues to explode across Asia. The same will be true for some of the big American gaming companies, but both suffer from a lack of local knowledge, and cross-pollination.

Going forward, Digi-Capital expects online and mobile games to significantly contribute to the growth of the international gaming market, with the total market reaching an estimated $82 billion by 2015, and online and mobile games taking 50 percent of that revenue. (Interestingly, it expects the pure console sector to be ?flat to down? over that time.) What?s more, the report forecasts that Asia and Europe will take 87 percent of the revenues for online and mobile games, with China leading at 36 percent, followed by Europe at 20 percent, South Korea at 12 percent, and Japan at 10 percent.

However, while online and mobile games are growing their scale and share of the overall market, consumer markets are expected to continue to fragment, and profitable business models will become harder to come by. Over the course of the next year, gaming companies will have to develop multiple development platforms, instead of relying on one hit game, and find multiple platform and geographical distributors. Relying solely on Facebook won?t cut it for long. Rapid, low-cost game development and redevelopment cycles, fast failure, strong analytics, and true scalability will continually become more significant as the industry matures.

That being said, Digi-Capital found that there is more demand for investment among high-growth gaming companies than there is supply, as ?outside major investment deals, online and mobile games companies still find it challenging to find high quality investors, and traditional VCs are becoming increasingly selective.? The current trend among VCs, the report finds, is to go after later-stage deals, but there?s potential to change as the market changes and more people flock to mobile and social games.

All in all, it seems there are plenty of potential growth and consolidation opportunities across the gaming sectors, but there?s no doubt that mobile-social, online, and cross-platform games will continue to explode over the course of the coming year, and we can expect M&A and investment activity to increase as social gaming works toward consolidation and more mobile gaming companies rise into the spotlight.
