Commercial property BPOs- Commercial/Industrial Appraisals ...

Ten years ago I was employed at an investment bank engaged in commercial loan portfolio acquisitions, and they ordered BPOs on the commercial properties serving as collateral. I think the going rate was about $300, but we sometimes had to pay $500 in busy metro areas like San Francisco.

The use of BPOs was meant to save time rather than money. In the sale of loan portfolios there is typically a 2-week due diligence period before bids have to be in.
Most appraisers told us they couldn't possibly deliver an estimate of value in less than 2 weeks, so we had to rely on brokers. Some brokers were better than appraisers; others were clueless. It's too bad that the appraisal profession has let this type of business slip into other hands.

Solar storm sparks earthly light show

The solar flare from last week resulted in spectacular northern lights in parts of Minnesota and other northern states. NBC's Brian Williams reports.

By Alan Boyle

The solar storm that swept past Earth over the weekend didn't disrupt any power grids, but it did turn on the auroral lights for skywatchers over a wide swath of North America, extending at least as far down as Arkansas.

SpaceWeather.com cataloged stunning photos from the usual places in northern climes, including Canadian provinces as well as the northern tier of the United States. But this particular solar storm ??sparked by last Thursday's big coronal mass ejection, or CME ??didn't stop there. Photographers sent in pictures from Arkansas as well as Ohio, Nebraska, Utah, California and other locales well south of the usual places.?There were auroral images as well from Scotland, Hungary, and yes, from New Zealand, Tasmania and the South Pole at the other end of the world.

Observers knew they were in for something big, due to the fact that the flare associated with the solar eruption reached an extreme level of X1.4 on the classification scale?for solar outbursts. The radio blast from a sunspot region known as AR 1520 resulted in a strong radio blackout for some high-frequency communication systems, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Space Weather Prediction Center.

Extreme solar storms have been known to knock out electrical grids as well as satellites, but this one apparently had no ill effects. Today, the prediction center said the stormy space weather "is finally showing signs of weakening."

"No further significant activity has occurred, and while Region 1520 has become less of a threat, it still has the potential for further activity," the center reported.

The sun is heading toward the high point of its 11-year activity cycle, with the maximum expected next year. That means this weekend's storm could just be a foretaste of what's ahead for aurora-watchers and space weather forecasters over the coming months. In the meantime, check out this gallery featuring the latest pictures from the world's greatest light show:

Brad Goldpaint / Copyright 2012 Goldpaint Photography

Photographer Brad Goldpaint snapped multiple frames of the northern lights on July 15. "I had an incredible experience last night capturing the aurora borealis over Sparks Lake in Central Oregon," he said in an email sent on Sunday. For more of his work, check out the Goldpaint Photography website.

Photographer Brian Emfinger captured this time-lapse video view of the auroral display over Ozark, Ark., on July 15. "There was a very faint red glow off and on most of the night, but around 2 a.m. CDT it began increasing. Around 3 a.m. and 3:30 a.m. there were pretty good outbursts," Emfinger told SpaceWeather.com. For more from Emfinger, check out RealClearWx.com.

Robert Snache / Spirithands Photography

The subtle glow of the aurora competes with the glare of a signal light at the Ojibway Bay Marina, as captured over the weekend by photographer Robert Snache of Rama First Nation in Ontario. For more of Snache's pictures, check out Spirithands Photography's Facebook page.

Randy Halverson / Dakotalapse

Rare pinks and blues glow in the skies over Kennebec, S.D., in a picture of the northern lights captured by Randy Halverson on July 15. "It was bright to the eye at the time this was taken," Halverson told SpaceWeather.com. "Clouds made it difficult to get good pictures, though." More of Halverson's imagery can be seen on the Dakotalapse website.

Home Improvement: Great Ideas For Sure Success | The Grace Clinic

Childproofing your home can have a lot of great long- term effects. Your child will grow up much healthier if you make sure that your home is safe from harmful gases and contaminating microscopic particles. Such steps to keep your child safe should begin with conception and not after your baby is born.

Building a dog house in ones backyard can provide a fun home improvement project for one to do with their family. It will also provide a place for the family dog to go when it is outside and wants to get some shade, get a drink or take a nap.

Make sure that any contract you sign when buying a home has your interests at heart. You need to have time to get financing, arrange a home inspection and discuss any problems in the home that may need repair. A contract that is written to protect you, is essential in giving you peace of mind and allowing you to enjoy your new home.

An important tip to remember with real estate is that when you are making improvements to your house, you should not date it with fashions that are on their way out. This is important because while something may look nice for the time being you should always be forward thinking, especially if you do plan on selling your house.

Tame you clutter and label it practically for free. Sometimes we spend too much time thinking about organization and not enough time doing it. Go ahead, sort the jumble of clutter into free cardboard boxes and label the outsides with masking tape and an indelible marker. You can perfect it all later!

If you need fencing that is both affordable and versatile, opt for a wooden fence. You can choose from a variety of wood types to find the most appropriate material for your particular climate and moisture levels. Wooden fencing is very diverse and can easily be stained to one of many natural-looking colors.

Rather than replacing the tile in your home?s bathroom or kitchen, consider re-grouting. In many cases, it is the build-up of dirt, grime and even oil, that is making your tile look old and dated. Scrub it clean, then scrape out the old grout for a quick way to refresh the room.

If you?re working with any type of gas in your home, you need to make sure that the gas is completely cut off. Just because you don?t smoke doesn?t mean you won?t end up creating a spark. Also, just because you?re not disconnecting the line doesn?t mean you didn?t let any gas loose when moving things around.

Be creative with your home improvement ideas, coming up with things that are new and exciting. You don?t have to follow the book when it comes to home improvement, as the key here is improvement and the improvement is based on your preferences. If you can put your mind together to create some neat new addition to your home, even if it has never been tried before, you could find it to be a fun and very exciting project to take on.

Install smoke detectors in every room of the house. Smoke detectors are cheap, and they can save your family?s life in the event of a fire. All you need for installation in most cases is a screwdriver. At a bare minimum, make sure you put one in the kitchen and one near the door of every bedroom.

When deciding what exterior renovations a home needs to make it saleable, step out to the curb and take a picture. The picture on your listing is the first exposure any potential buyers will have to your home. If your picture shows a dingy house with overgrown landscaping, fix it!

Isn?t creating your own home improvement job fun? As you have seen in this article, there are a lot of ways this can be done and no two techniques or products will yield the same results. There are also lots of customizable options that can work with your home and budget.

China-Made U.S. Olympic Uniforms Cause Controversy

NEW YORK ? The U.S. uniforms for the opening ceremonies at the 2012 Olympics games are causing a firestorm. It?s not the colors or style that?s has some up in arms. It?s where the clothes were made.

?I am so upset that I think the Olympic committee should be ashamed of themselves,? said? Democratic Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid.

The uniforms designed by Ralph Lauren include blazers, trousers and a French-style beret in red, white and blue. But it?s not the designer?s style that has left many angered. It?s that the uniforms were made in china.

A number of lawmakers are pointing fingers at the Olympic committee?s decision to manufacture the wardrobes overseas while the American textile industry struggles and many workers are desperate for jobs.

?You think they would know better,? said Speaker of the House John Boehner.

Democratic Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi echoed the same sentiments.

?They should be wearing uniforms that are made in America,? she said.

In the wake of the controversy, the U.S. olympic committee has released a statement defending Ralph Lauren. It reads in part: ?All this talk about Olympic uniforms made in China is nonsense. Polo RL is an American company that supports American athletes?

But the sentiment is not enough to calm Democratic Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid.

?I think they should take all the uniforms, put them in a big pile and burn them and start all over again,? he said. ?If they have to wear nothing but a singlet that says USA on it, painted by hand, that is what they should wear.?

Ralph Lauren also is dressing the paralympic teams for the closing ceremony and providing casual clothes to be worn around the Olympic village.? The company has declined to comment on the criticism.

Utah Championship golf: Trevor Murphy, Tyrone van Aswegen both fire course record 9-under 62

SANDY ? Trevor Murphy simply wanted to make the cut. After shooting an even-par-71 in the opening round of the Web.com Tour's Utah Championship, he needed to fire at least 3-under to even make it to the weekend.

So, he went out at Willow Creek Country Club and shot a 9-under-62. No biggie ? only tied the course record ? not a big deal at all. Yeah, right.

"I probably would have taken makin' the cut at the start of the day," Murphy joked.

Now, what if he wasn't the only one to pencil in a 62, Friday?

Well, believe it or not, Tyrone van Aswegen actually did, too, 15-minutes earlier in the leading group ? finishing 10-under.

"Who else did?" Murphy asked when told that he wasn't the only record-setter shortly after signing his scorecard. "Oh he did? He shot a 62? Nice."

Somewhat buried beneath the record-breaking rounds of van Aswegen and Murphy was another solid outing by Morgan Hoffmann. The 22-year-old, who was tied with two others at 7-under atop the leaderboard, took sole possession of first place behind his 4-under-67.

Doug LaBelle II, who also gunned an opening day 7-under, along with Andres Gonzales and van Aswegen, trail one stroke back at 10-under. Murphy and the 2010 Utah Championship winner, Michael Putnam, claimed the No. 3 spots at 9-under followed by seven golfers at 8-under.

The field was cut in half at 3-under heading into Saturday's "Pink on the Links" cancer awareness round.

The 30-year-old, South Africa native van Aswegen started Friday at 1-under-par, but thanks in large part to his short game, quickly changed his fortunes. On No. 8 he sunk a 30-foot right-to-left putt with 4-feet of break for birdie. Then, on No. 9 ? his final hole ? placed his approach shot inches from the cup for a tap-in birdie.

"It just seemed so easy. It's weird how sometimes you get in the zone," van Aswegen said. "It's hard to explain ? like standing over the (second shot) on the last hole ? I was like, 'man, this just feels comfortable and easy.'

"Yesterday, I burnt the edges all day long. It seemed like I was hitting great putts, (but) the balls were not going in the hole," he continued. "On my last hole yesterday I made about a 20-footer ? the line and pace were perfect ? and I guess it just opened up the flood gates."

It became clear that it was Murphy's day when he chipped in for eagle on No.17.

Compelling Reasons to Upgrade Your Shutters

Window treatments have gone through a lot of phases over the years. We have seen all manner of drapes, curtains, blinds, and variations thereof come and go. While the styles change, the idea never seems to; you want something that looks nice with your home or business, but allows you to let in a certain amount of light or none at all, when you prefer it.

Now, shutters have started to really gain traction as a great all-around solution for windows. They can be used in conjunction with windows or other treatments, but provide a lot of benefits that drapes, curtains, or other items often cannot. There are many compelling reasons to either switch to shutters, add shutters, or simply upgrade the ones that you have.

There are many types of shutters to choose from. Some of the features that you can get from shutters include not only enhanced appearance of your home, but also increased privacy and security, added value to your home, and more efficiency in heating and cooling during the cooler and warmer months, respectively.

Security shutters are made to be heavy duty and can often include locks and other features. These shutters will ensure that your home, business, or other building is kept secure, even if you are not there all of the time. Many times aluminum shutters are considered to be very good for security, although different materials are sometimes used.

Roller shutters are very versatile for allowing you to customize how you want them to look on the fly. On nice days, they can be rolled up, or rolled down for greater privacy, to keep the heat in (or out), and so forth. A good roller shutter, like many shutter upgrades, will also add a lot to the value of your home.

When buying window shutters Melbourne (or window shutters Brisbane and other Australian locations), you may have a number of choices of how to do so. There are Australian-based shutter manufacturers and sellers both online and in physical stores, although shopping online seems to give an edge in terms of pricing and selection. Whether you are in the market for any old window shutters or a certain type of roller shutter, you will often have to be prepared to do some research to ensure you get the right product and that it works well with your home both aesthetically and functionally.

While really nice window shutters and roller blinds are not cheap, you will likely be able to find a deal that you can afford with enough research. Make sure to set a budget early on that you can live with, and try not to skimp because you will have a hard time finding quality products if you want to pay the lowest possible amount. This is where a little versatility on your part is key. Remember that shutters are not only functionally valuable, but work as an investment that adds value to buildings that they are installed on.

Shutters provide a lot of advantages to other window treatments, especially since they can be used in conjunction with curtains and other items. They are better for security, energy conservation, and adding value to a residence than curtains are, which makes them a worthwhile upgrade when you want to make your home more energy efficient, comfortable, and valuable. With many different compositions as far as what materials are used to make them, as well as different functions and features, you will certainly be able to find something that is within your price range with a little effort and research.

Why the thrill is gone: Potential target for treating major symptom of depression

ScienceDaily (July 11, 2012) ? Stanford University School of Medicine scientists have laid bare a novel molecular mechanism responsible for the most important symptom of major depression: anhedonia, the loss of the ability to experience pleasure. While their study was conducted in mice, the brain circuit involved in this newly elucidated pathway is largely identical between rodents and humans, upping the odds that the findings point toward new therapies for depression and other disorders.

Additionally, opinion leaders hailed the study's inventive methodology, saying it may offer a much sounder approach to testing new antidepressants than the methods now routinely used by drug developers.

While as many as one in six Americans is likely to suffer a major depression in their lifetimes, current medications either are inadequate or eventually stop working in as many as 50 percent of those for whom they're prescribed.

"This may be because all current medications for depression work via the same mechanisms," said Robert Malenka, MD, PhD, the Nancy Friend Pritzker Professor in Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences. "They increase levels of one or another of two small molecules that some nerve cells in the brain use to signal one another. To get better treatments, there's a great need to understand in greater detail the brain biology that underlies depression's symptoms." The study's first author is Byung Kook Lim, PhD, a postdoctoral scholar in Malenka's laboratory.

Malenka is senior author of the new study, published July 12 in Nature, which reveals a novel drug target by showing how a hormone known to affect appetite turns off the brain's ability to experience pleasure when an animal is stressed. This hormone, melanocortin, signals to an ancient and almost universal apparatus deep in the brain called the reward circuit, which has evolved to guide animals toward resources, behaviors and environments -- such as food, sex and warmth -- that enhance their prospects for survival.

"This is the first study to suggest that we should look at the role of melanocortin in depression-related syndromes," said Eric Nestler, MD, PhD, professor and chair of neuroscience and director of the Friedman Brain Institute at Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York. Nestler was not involved in the study but is familiar with its contents.

The specific causes of depression are not well understood. There is no laboratory test for depression -- the diagnosis is based mainly on patients' own reports of lethargy, despondency, despair and disturbances of appetite and sleep -- but a core symptom is anhedonia, also known as the blues.

In their search for new compounds to combat depression, however, drug developers typically have used tests of mouse behaviors that may not truly reflect this key feature of depression -- and may also limit the search for effective drugs. "Not all animal models are created equal," said Malenka.

In this study, Malenka and his colleagues instead tested a mouse's ability to experience enjoyment. In another departure from more common practice in studies of depression, the scientists conducted their behavioral measurements after exposing the mice to chronic stress -- the kind that we humans experience all too often -- rather than simply placing otherwise happy, normal mice in a single stressful situation.

"Depression in people often involves chronic stress," commented Nestler. "Tossing a person in a swimming pool and telling him to swim doesn't induce despair."

Yet it is precisely tests of this type that have been primarily used in the pharmaceutical industry's hunts for new antidepressants. Common animal assays of depression involve placing normal animals in stressful conditions and then measuring observable outcomes. One example is the "forced swim" test: throwing a rodent into water and measuring how long it takes for the animal to give up trying to swim -- an outcome assumed to indicate "behavioral despair."

This assumption is a red herring because it imputes a state of mind, despair, to rats and mice who not only can't talk about their feelings but who may not experience anything remotely like what we mean by the word despair, said Steven Hyman, MD, director of the Stanley Center for Psychiatric Research at the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard and the former provost of Harvard University. "Who interviewed the mouse? Maybe it stopped swimming to conserve energy."

In 2010, Hyman (who, like Nestler, has seen Malenka's study but played no role in it) and Nestler co-authored a widely acknowledged review in Nature Neuroscience criticizing the way animal assays are used in neuropsychiatric drug development. "Unfortunately, widely used behavioral tests [such as the forced-swim test] are not models of depression at all. Instead, they are rapid, black box tests developed decades ago to screen compounds for antidepressant activity," wrote Nestler and Hyman in their review article.

Moreover, Nestler and Hyman wrote, although a single dose of many currently used antidepressants can prolong the period during which an animal continues to struggle, single doses of these drugs are never effective in people. To relieve actual cases of human depression, they must be administered for weeks or months.

Assays such as the forced-swim test are relatively fast and cheap. But, said Hyman, they may be inadvertently screening out compounds that could be effective in restoring a depressed person's ability to experience pleasure even though they don't prolong an animal's struggle in response to a dunking.

Tests that directly measure an experimental animal's interest in pleasure-seeking appear to more faithfully reflect a true symptom of human depression, Nestler and Hyman said. One example is the so-called sucrose-preference test. If you give mice a choice between water and water containing dissolved sugar, they usually go for the sugar water. Chronically stressed mice lose that preference, just as people suffering depression induced by life's chronic stresses lose the joy of good food, sex, physical comfort and the like.

Malenka's team decided to use chronically stressed mice to explore the activity of a naturally occurring molecule, melanocortin.

"A few scattered studies had suggested that chronic stress increased melanocortin levels in the brain," he said. "And it was known that stressed animals have heightened numbers of receptors for melanocortin in the nucleus accumbens," a key region of the reward circuit. If this all-important circuit is working properly, it doles out pleasure when an animal achieves a desirable goal or experiences rewarding stimuli, such as food or sex. If it's not working properly, anhedonia is the result.

But it wasn't yet known, Malenka continued, whether melanocortin actually affected the nucleus accumbens or how. "We wanted to find out, because we were wondering if by modulating melanocortin's activity with a drug we could relieve or prevent a major symptom of depression."

Malenka's team subjected mice to chronic stress by confining them, for three to four hours a day, in small conical tubes with holes in them for air flow over a period of eight days. This stressful confinement clearly reduced the mice's preference for sugar water over plain water. (The animals also lost about 5-10 percent of their body weight, a frequent depression symptom.)

Rather than simply noting the altered sugar-preference behaviors in the stressed mice, the investigators used electrophysiological, biochemical and gene-transferring techniques to manipulate and, ultimately, to delineate the precise brain circuitry involved in the stress-elicited behavioral changes right down to the molecular level.

For example, the researchers scrutinized the nerve cells in the nucleus accumbens that contain receptors for melanocortin. Those nerve cells receive signals from a melanocortin-secreting nerve tract that impinges on them. The scientists found that both chronic stress and the direct administration of melanocortin diminished the signaling strength of some of the tiny electrochemical contacts, known as synapses, on a set of nerve cells in the nucleus accumbens that contain receptors for melanocortin. When these receptors were removed using a sophisticated laboratory trick, the same stressful confinement no longer caused changes in those nerve cells' synapses. Simultaneously, despite the weeklong stressful experience, the mice's sugar preference was returned to normal. Plus, the animals no longer lost weight.

To test whether preventing these stress-elicited biochemical changes in the brain also reduced the effects of stress on the mice's behavioral response to things besides food and sugar water, the research team substituted cocaine for sugar. They got the same constellation of results with cocaine as they had in their earlier experimentation -- further strong evidence that the chronic-stress-induced changes in the brain due to melanocortin action cause an animal to lose its ability to experience pleasure.

Importantly, Malenka and his associates also demonstrated that the brain circuit transmitting melanocortin's morose message to the reward circuitry operates independently of the circuitry responsible for making a mouse give up the ghost when the game gets too tough. Manipulating the melanocortin-associated pathway in the nucleus accumbens had no effect on the mice's performance in the forced-swim test. The stressed mice gave up just as easily when the melanocortin receptors in their nucleus accumbens were depleted as when they weren't.

By looking at the circuits and mechanisms underlying anhedonia, Malenka and his associates thus avoided a pitfall of research on mental diseases, said Hyman. "This study shows how animal research ought to be done," he said.

The melanocortin pathway is already of interest to drug companies, Malenka said, because it appears to be involved in appetite disorders. So companies already have melanocortin mimics and inhibitors at their disposal that could be used in clinical tests to determine whether managing patients' melanocortin signaling relieves anhedonia. This could have implications beyond treatments for depression because anhedonia manifests in other neuropsychiatric syndromes, such as schizophrenia, as well as in terminally ill people who have given up hope.

How neuroscience and artificial intelligence challenge ideas of what makes humankind special

Web edition : 10:49 am

DUBLIN ? Time and again in recent centuries, science has challenged humankind?s conception of itself. Copernicus demoted humans from their central location in the cosmos. Darwin denied their inherent distinction from other animals. Computers now trounce human intellect, defeating the smartest people at chess and on Jeopardy! And lately modern neuroscience has pretty much demolished traditional views of souls and selfhood.

?The neuroscience revolution and the genomics revolution are changing the way that we look at ourselves,? says neuroscientist-science writer Lone Frank of the Danish newspaper Weekendavisen. ?If you take neuroscience as an example, it?s becoming very clear that we?re killing off the soul. We are realizing, and it?s seeping into our culture, that we are our brains. And that means also that there is no essential self in there.?

Frank, author of the recent books Mindfield and My Beautiful Genome, acknowledges that many people don?t especially appreciate hearing that message. But it?s a natural enough topic to discuss on occasions where science meets culture, such as the Euroscience Open Forum 2012. Known as ESOF, the conference takes place every other year in a European city eager to host leading scientists and science journalists for a mix of technical presentations and culture-oriented discussions and activities.

During a talk and at a news conference July 12, Frank remarked on neuroscience?s impact on humans? outdated notion of self.

?There?s no true one self in any person,? she said. ?We are our brain ? that means we are the state that our brains are in at a certain time. And it?s also becoming very clear from neuroscience that the brain is extremely plastic and that we can change it in different ways, with devices, with cognitive techniques ?, with drugs.?

In other words, you don?t have to be stuck with who you think you were born to be. ?Instead of looking for who we are, we are trying to figure out who we want to be,? Frank said.

Assaults on humans? ideas of identity are coming from another angle as well, namely rapid progress in the field of artificial intelligence. As computers outcompete humans in many intellectual pursuits, people have clung to certain sensory skills as evidence of superiority. This strategy may turn out to be of special interest to other occupants of the planet, suggested Brian Christian, author of The Most Human Human: What Artificial Intelligence Teaches Us About Being Alive.

?In some ways the development of artificial intelligence may prove to be an unexpected boon for animal rights,? he said.

Comparing ourselves with machines to define humanness is a shift from two millennia of philosophical effort to contrast humans with other animals, Christian pointed out.

?We?re finding that precisely the things that seem to most greatly differentiate us from artificial intelligence are the very types of skills that we share with other animals ? the ability to live the sort of sensory-embodied existence where we recognize objects, navigate space, exchange communication ? a lot of the things that philosophers had written off about the human species precisely because animals shared them. These have turned out to be the greater hurdles for artificial intelligence.?

Someday, of course, machines may close the gap between them and humans (and other animals). Humans are still better than computers at driving cars, for instance, because of the need to quickly identify objects appearing in the road ? distinguishing a shadow from a piece of trash or a dog or a child. Computers may achieve such skill, Christian believes, through programming that makes use of Bayesian probability.

?The first several decades of computer science were defined by the rigidity of the logic ? either it was zero or it was one, it was true or false,? Christian said. ?I think the next few decades are going to be defined by probabilistic reasoning using Bayesian inference.?

With Bayesian reasoning, inferences are based on probabilities weighted by evidence from experience. It seems to be the way humans learn how to cope with the world and reason about appropriate behaviors (see ?The Probabilistic Mind? SN: 10/8/11, p. 18).

Human evolutionary success no doubt has rested largely on the brain?s ability to incorporate the principles of Bayesian mathematics. Ironically, though, about a century ago human scientists largely abandoned Bayesian methods for scientific purposes. Standard statistical methods for reaching scientific conclusions instead follow a textbook prescription concocted to make calculations more feasible, not more correct.

Nowadays, that same advanced computing power that makes artificial intelligence a threat to human egos also allows difficult Bayesian computations to be performed more efficiently, so Bayesian methods are making a comeback. It?s another benefit of the brain?s ability to change itself.

Society for the Study of Ingestive Behavior

7/10/12, Zurich, Switzerland. Research to be presented at the Annual Meeting of the Society for the Study of Ingestive Behavior (SSIB), the foremost society for research into all aspects of eating and drinking behavior, finds that prolonged exposure to a high-fat diet reduces the quality of sleep in rats.

Using radio-telemetry, the authors measured 24-hour sleep and wake states after rats consumed a high fat diet for 8 weeks. Compared to rats that consumed a standard laboratory chow, the rats on the high-fat diet slept more but sleep was fragmented. The increased sleep time of the rats on the high-fat diet occurred mainly during the normally active phase of the day, resembling excessive daytime sleepiness observed in obese humans.

According to lead author, Catherine Kotz, "Studies in humans indicate a relationship between sleep quality and obesity. Our previous work in animals shows a link between good quality sleep, resistance to weight gain and increased sensitivity to orexin, a brain chemical important in stabilizing sleep and wake states. The current studies show that after high-fat diet-induced weight gain in rats, sleep quality is poor and orexin sensitivity is decreased. These findings suggest that poor sleep associated with weight gain due to a high-fat diet may be a consequence of reduced orexin sensitivity".

These studies highlight the impact of weight gain on sleep quality and a potential brain mechanism underlying these diet and weight-gain induced changes in sleep behavior.

John Boehner Now Says Voters Will Be 'Enthusiastic' About Mitt Romney

WASHINGTON -- A week and half after saying most Americans "probably aren't going to fall in love with Mitt Romney," House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) on Tuesday revised his sentiments and predicted that people are going to be "enthusiastic" about the GOP presidential nominee come November.

"Listen, I'm going to be enthusiastic about voting for Gov. Romney in November," Boehner told Capitol Hill reporters. "And I think the American people will be enthusiastic about voting for Gov. Romney in November."

Boehner's comments come after he raised some eyebrows at a June 30 fundraiser by saying that, apart from Romney's "friends, relatives and fellow Mormons," most people will be motivated to vote for Romney because of their opposition to President Barack Obama, not because they're actually excited about Romney. His comments reinforce a feeling expressed earlier in the race that conservatives aren't thrilled by their party's candidate.

"The American people probably aren?t going to fall in love with Mitt Romney," Boehner said at the fundraiser, according to Roll Call. "I'll tell you this: 95 percent of the people that show up to vote in November are going to show up in that voting booth, and they are going to vote for or against Barack Obama."

Boehner tried to recast his comments on Tuesday, saying "the point I was trying to make" was that the election is going to be a referendum on Obama's economic policies.

"His policies have made the economy worse. They just haven't worked and they really have made it worse," he said. "So it's going to be a referendum. I'll be out there enthusiastically supporting him."

HBT: Mets pitcher hospitalized for finger numbness

UPDATE: Brad Como of SNY reports that tests on Gee revealed a clot in the artery of his right shoulder.

UPDATE #2: Gee will be placed on the disabled list and is expected to remain in the hospital for another day or two while doctors monitor the clot after they used a catheter to break it up.

==========

Adam Rubin of ESPN New York reports that Mets starter Dillon Gee has been hospitalized for what manager Terry Collins described as numbness in his fingers.

?They aren?t sure what it is yet,? Collins told Rubin, adding that Gee is scheduled to undergo an angiogram and further testing.

Gee was admitted to the hospital Monday and Rubin talked to an unnamed Mets teammate who said ?the issue was believed to be blood-related in Gee?s shoulder.?

Gee, who?s emerged as a solid mid-rotation starter for the Mets at age 26 and threw 110 innings with a 4.10 ERA and 97/29 K/BB ratio in the first half, is lined up to start the second-half opener.

Cranberry products associated with prevention of urinary tract infections

ScienceDaily (July 9, 2012) ? Use of cranberry-containing products appears to be associated with prevention of urinary tract infections in some individuals, according to a study that reviewed the available medical literature and was published by Archives of Internal Medicine, a JAMA Network publication.

Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are common bacterial infections and adult women are particularly susceptible. Cranberry-containing products have long been used as a "folk remedy" to prevent the condition, according to the study background.

Chih-Hung Wang, M.D., of National Taiwan University Hospital and National Taiwan University College of Medicine, and colleagues reviewed the available medical literature to reevaluate cranberry-containing products for the prevention of UTI.

"Cranberry-containing products tend to be more effective in women with recurrent UTIs, female populations, children, cranberry juice drinkers, and people using cranberry-containing products more than twice daily," the authors note.

The authors identified 13 trials, including 1,616 individuals, for qualitative analysis and 10 of these trials, including 1,494 individuals, were included in quantitative analysis. The random-effects pooled risk ratio for cranberry users vs. nonusers was 0.62, according to the study results.

"In conclusion, the results of the present meta-analysis support that consumption of cranberry-containing products may protect against UTIs in certain populations. However, because of the substantial heterogeneity across trials, this conclusion should be interpreted with great caution," the authors conclude.

Massive chocolate bull greets rodeo fans in Calgary

An 880-pound chocolate bull on display at Calgary's International Airport.

By Harriet Baskas, msnbc.com contributor

A lot of bull arrived at Canada?s Calgary International Airport?last week?? or, to be more precise, an 880-pound, near life-size bull made entirely of chocolate.

Created by Calgary-based Chocolaterie Bernard Callebaut,?the bull is a tribute to the 100th?anniversary of the Calgary Stampede,?an annual 10-day rodeo and entertainment extravaganza that runs this year through July 15.

About 400,000 rodeo fans converge in Calgary each year for the Stampede and Tourism Calgary president/CEO Randy Williams estimates that close to 10 percent of those temporary cowboys and cowgirls are from the United States.

To help welcome stampede-bound travelers, Calgary International Airport gets gussied up with hay bales, fences and painted windows and schedules contests, sidewalk sales and entertainment.

The chocolate bull is new this year, but should be kicking around for years to come. ?We are hoping to shellac it and keep it for future stampede decorations,? said Jody Moseley, director of corporate communications and marketing for the Calgary Airport Authority.??It?s beautiful, chocolate art.?

And there's no tasting allowed ? and that's no bull.
