How to write good product marketing copy for the Web

This post is by guest blogger, Charles Born:

I could subtitle this ?How to Lose at Buzzword Bingo and Increase Sales? but this is not where I whine further about buzzwords and jargon. I did that in previous blogs (Buzzword Bingo and Avoiding the Buzzword Bingo Trap). All kidding aside, there is a time for professional jargon: when you know you?re speaking to an audience that understands you, and you need the extra specificity and precision that jargon can sometimes provide. If you?re using it outside of that then you?re probably not communicating clearly, honestly, or effectively.

In the web and social marketing world, online ?conversations? are the perfect opportunity to meet buyers? information needs with smartly targeted and informative content that buyers consider valuable. Unfortunately, Web copy is often written in less than ideal circumstances by product marketers who do not have the time to do it right.

The good news is that anyone who writes content can ensure that every chunk of text on the web is doing something concrete and useful. Good marketing copy accomplishes specific goals; just touting a product is not one of them.

Let?s look at an example. Here is a chunk of text displayed prominently on one company?s website:

With Product X advanced features, capturing and reporting product sales data in the cloud and in real-time can improve operational intelligence and provide insight that enables more effective strategic, tactical and effective decision-making. With Product X researching your online sales is FASTER!

What do we know about this product from the two statements? Intelligence and insight will be improved by capturing and reporting! And that will enable, among many other things, better tactical decision-making! And we end with a tag line ? in CAPITAL letters no less?with an exclamation point, indeed! Here we have a simple example of what happens when the goal of the writing is to fill up a web page with copy.

How do you approach writing product copy and potentially winning buyer attention and sales interest?

Just KIS ? Keep It Simple (not stupid)

Most product content needs to answer 4 basic questions:

  1. Who is the product for?
  2. What is the product?
  3. What does the product do for its target user?
  4. Why is the product better than the available alternatives?

The lack of answers to these really basic questions is what frustrates buyers in their journey and wastes marketing money on writing babble. To do it right, let?s look at the questions in more detail.

Who is the product for? Think of your target audience. Can they tell from this copy that you are speaking to them? Can other people outside your audience tell that you are NOT speaking to them?

What is the product? Try to write in conversational tone using short and simple sentences. Make sure you have spelled out, clearly and in simple language, what the product is and that the nouns as concrete as you can make them.

What does the product do for its target user? Be specific in laying out the product?s primary features and benefits in a clear, concrete way.

Why is this product better than the available alternatives? Here is where flowery prose needs to be edited. If you make a claim, give evidence for the claims clearly and without empty language that makes you look like boasting.

Answer these questions, and you?ll communicate more clearly and efficiently than the horde of companies who?ve filled their web product pages with the content equivalent of cotton candy.

Please share your tips and suggestions to making content work.

Use This Advice For Better Internet Marketing | Lori Robertson's ...

Welcome Back! Glad To See You Again! If have not done so please subscribe to my RSS Feed. You don't want to miss any of this valuable content!

Internet marketing, done well, can bring lots of customers your way. There are lots of different ways one can interact and communicate customers today that was never possible in the past. Use this article?s advice to learn of all success you can have with Internet marketing.

Consider how important mobile marketing could be. Allow your visitors to have the opportunity to receive text alerts when special sales are available or if there is a brand new product being launched. This is the newest way to advertise and customers love it.

A comprehensive online marketing strategy should make use of social media platforms like Twitter, Facebook and others. They help you keep in touch with customers and provide an easy way to advertise. Just be sure not to promote too much with tweets and comments. Make sure that you focus on quality when updating your social media outlets.

Make a game if you want to attract others to your website. People are always searching for games to play for nothing, even small ones will have people returning to you over and over. The game should be relevant to the products you sell on your website. One example would be that if you sell products for hair care, you could make a hair-inspired game that features your products.

Consider creating a public relations web page for your business as a possible internet marketing strategy. The content of the page should include information that the media would be interested in, including high-resolution product photography, press releases and even story pitches. This is the best way to get the public to see your business and it can easily be done.

Direct marketing is complementary to any Internet marketing campaign. Combine traditional advertising methods with your Internet marketing strategy. A local phone book or online directory can be an invaluable source of information as you prepare to contact customers.

When you are starting to market your business online, you should look in to advertising. Although the up-front expenses can be high, the traffic and leads that ads generate make the investment worthwhile. This helps get business with customers who wouldn?t otherwise have found your site.

Give your company?s website a URL that is simple and memorable. Try finding a domain name that lets you incorporate your business name or brand. Create an easy to remember website address so that your customers do not have to look you up in a search engine.

Be certain that the information you provide to customers when you promote your business is appropriate. Strive to make your content valuable and unique. It is important to keep your site updated so that users will always have the newest information about your business.

You should include evidence to back up anything you claim in your advertising. People are justifiably skeptical of what they read on the Internet. You will come off much more credible if you provide references, guarantees, studies and testimonials. By simply making statements without proof, people may dismiss you and your business.

You can use Internet marketing to build the largest customer base possible. It is also the key to keeping current customers happy. This customer and business interaction has never before been possible, but is now with the power of the Internet. The strategies listed here will help you become a leader in Internet marketing.

Passion for ink, Kipps Lane | Local | News | The London Free Press

When Will Graham opened Neon Crab Tattoos and Piercing in London?s Kipps Lane neighbourhood four years ago, he saw a tight-knit community with potential for growth.

The neighbourhood was ideal because it?s densely populated, on several bus routes and between Western University and Fanshawe College. But the area was wrestling with the false perception it was a violent, unsafe place to live.

?I?m kind of new to London, but what I?ve learned is that everyone hears ?Kipps Lane? and they think ?Gangland? and it?s really not,? he said.

In the last four years, Graham has gotten involved in the community and fought against that negative perception.

His work led to a spot as a finalist for a Pillar Community Innovation Award in leadership. (The awards will be handed out Nov. 13 at the London Convention Centre).

Soon after Neon Crab opened in the Kipps Lane Plaza, Graham launched the Pink Ink event when his staff volunteer their time to tattoo pink ribbons in October to raise funds and awareness for breast cancer.

He also works with the Carling-Thames Family Centre painting interactive murals, runs the northeast community market, an outdoor market with a focus on youth entrepreneurship that he hopes one day will be like the ?Dragons? Den of London,? and is trying to start a Kipps Lane business association.

As if that wasn?t enough, Graham also is working on developing a tattoo convention in London.

He?s already laid the groundwork for that by having a recognition and award show for local tattoo artists with plans to expand it to include open submissions from any London artist.

?Tattoo artists are still considered tattooists. We?re not really recognized as skilled labour or artists in our own right. It?s still very much a back-door industry and it shouldn?t be,? he said.

His tattoo studio has grown from the small single storefront it once had with Graham as the only artist, to now taking up more space in the plaza and employing 11 artists.

In 2010, he opened a second Neon Crab Tattoos and Piercing in Parkhill.

Born and raised in Kitchener, Graham travelled Ontario before planting roots in London in 2005.

A multimedia artist, he began his training at Eastwood Collegiate in Kitchener. He worked as a commercial artist for seven years, his work taking him across the province, working on everything from album covers and movie posters to fine-art prints. His work was displayed in Times Square in New York City in June and the Arts Project in London.

Now Graham is trying to raise funds to open a community art gallery where anyone can access exhibition space.

?I guess I just like giving back now that I?m available and able to.?

UPS 3Q profit falls on charge; narrows forecast

(AP) ? UPS says it's uncertain how strong the holiday shopping season will be, and that the pace of global growth remains uneven.

But the world's largest package delivery company managed to match Wall Street expectations for third quarter earnings, and shares rose slightly before the market opened Tuesday.

The company reported a drop in third-quarter earnings Tuesday, as declines in its U.S. package and freight business offset improving international operating profit. UPS' net income was hurt by a huge penalty to withdraw from a pension plan. Even without that big charge, net income eased ? although it matched forecasts from Wall Street analysts.

"Our results were achieved in an environment of slowing global trade and changing market dynamics," said Scott Davis, UPS chairman and CEO

The Atlanta company said it is able to better forecast its earnings for the year. It narrowed its outlook to a range of $4.55 to $4.65 per share, from an earlier forecast of $4.50 to $4.75. It predicting adjusted net income will rise between 5 and 7 percent from adjusted results in 2011.

In the most recent quarter, United Parcel Service Inc. earned $469 million, or 48 cents per share, compared with $1.07 billion, or $1.09 per share, a year earlier. Without the huge charge, it earned $1.03 billion, or $1.06 per share. Revenue fell less than 1 percent to $13.07 billion.

Analysts polled by FactSet expected a profit of $1.06 per share on revenue of $13.32 billion.

While operating profit declined at UPS' core US package segment, the international segment produced its highest-ever profit for the summer quarter. The domestic unit is more than double the size of international.

The company's stock price rose $1.04, or 1.45 percent, to $72.60 in premarket trading.

France backs Airbus in funding row with Germany

TOULOUSE, France (Reuters) - France backed Airbus on Tuesday in a row with Germany over funding for its next jetliner, in a sign of lingering tension following the collapse of a European aerospace industry merger.

Germany is unhappy about its share of work on the $15 billion A350 aircraft project and has withheld half of a roughly 1.2 billion euro ($1.6 billion) development loan, sources close to the matter say.

In a rare intervention, French Prime Minister Jean-Marc Ayrault said it was essential all partners met their funding commitments for the A350, the newest generation of aircraft in the European planemaker's fierce rivalry with Boeing .

Speaking at the inauguration of an A350 production plant in southwest France, Ayrault did not refer to France's closest ally by name. But he left no doubt that he was referring to the rift with Germany, which has deepened since Berlin blocked a merger between Airbus parent EADS and UK's BAE Systems .

Speaking to over 1,000 workers, Ayrault said:

"The European partner nations...have always played a major role in the development of major aerospace projects," he said.

"It is of course the case for the A350, and it is essential that their commitments are met in full. As for France, its own commitments will be respected."

Plans for the $45 billion merger to form the world's largest aerospace and defense group fell part earlier this month with most of the participants blaming German Chancellor Angela Merkel for derailing the deal, something Berlin denies.

Flanked by heads of EADS and Airbus during an emotional ceremony honoring one of the planemaker's founders, Ayrault gave strong backing to EADS Chief Executive Tom Enders.

"I have supported EADS," he told reporters. "It is very important to give a message of confidence to the whole of the EADS group, not just Airbus, and I think this was expected."

Enders, a German-born executive who has clashed with Berlin over his decision to base the aerospace group in Toulouse where many of its aircraft are built, chatted and joked with airline customers but did not take a direct part in the ceremony.

His successor at the helm of Airbus, Frenchman Fabrice Bregier, acknowledged the tensions with Berlin.

"To my knowledge, we've still some debates in Germany and only in Germany," he told reporters. "But I'm very confident that we'll get through that and that we'll demonstrate that the A350 is not limited to the assembly line in Toulouse."

LIGHTER JETS

Even as European nations argue over A350 funding, the use of government loans to help finance Airbus projects is itself the subject of a bitter trade dispute with the United States.

"Father of Airbus" Roger Beteille, 91, paid tribute to European aircraft co-operation as he received a standing ovation from Airbus workers in the assembly hall named in his honor.

The new Airbus jet heralds a new phase in the race for fuel efficiency and profits with U.S. rival Boeing.

Built in response to the Boeing 787 Dreamliner, the A350 is Europe's first contribution to a new generation of jets designed to cut airline fuel bills by using mainly lightweight carbon-composite materials instead of heavier aluminum.

Airbus and Boeing expect total demand for more than 6,000 such mid-sized, long-range jets worth hundreds of billions of dollars over the next 20 years.

Their arrival is expected to alter the shape of long-haul travel by leading to new routes bypassing crowded hub airports, since the aircraft are smaller than people-carriers such as the Airbus A380 superjumbo and the newest version of Boeing's 747.

But both firms face huge construction challenges for the revolutionary jets, woven and baked out of carbon fiber that is stronger and lighter than metal but costlier to produce. Neither the A350 nor the 787 is expected to make a profit for years.

Airbus says the A350 will take to the skies in the summer of 2013 and enter service in the second half of 2014. Production is scheduled to peak at 10 aircraft a month in 2018. Three variants will be produced, seating between 270 and 350 people.

Bregier confirmed that Airbus was looking at increasing volumes for the largest of the three, the A350-1000, in a battle for the mini-jumbo market as reported by Reuters on Monday.

Russia's Rosneft buys out TNK-BP

MOSCOW (AP) ? Russian state-owned oil giant Rosneft strengthened its hold on the country's lucrative oil industry when it sealed a $61 billion deal, buying TNK-BP, the joint venture between a group of Russian oil oligarchs and the British energy company.

BP, however, does not end its 15-year-involvement in Russia by selling its 50 percent stake in TNK-BP. As well as receiving $17.1 billion in cash from Rosneft, it's also getting a 12.84 percent stake in Russia's biggest oil company. The British company is also planning to use some of the money it's reaped from the sale to raise its stake in Rosneft to 19.75 percent.

In a parallel development, Rosneft said it had agreed to buy the other 50 percent in the joint venture from AAR, for $28 billion, and that the deal was "entirely independent of the transaction with BP." AAR confirmed that a memorandum of understanding has been signed, but added that it is still subject to other conditions.

Following the deal, Rosneft will leapfrog ExxonMobil Corp. to become the world's largest publicly traded producer of oil and gas, in terms of output ? ExxonMobil's latest earnings show its daily output at 4.2 million, below the expanded Rosneft's projected 4.6 million.

It said it would finance the deal with its own cash as well as new borrowings.

Rosneft CEO Igor Sechin broke the news about the deal Monday afternoon to President Vladimir Putin, telling him that the deal would be worth about $61 billion.

"This is a good big deal which is important not only for Russia's energy sector but for the entire Russian economy," Putin said in remarks carried by Russian television.

Sechin told Russian news agencies following his meeting with Putin that Rosneft would probably use loans from foreign banks as well as funds raised from the sale of non-core assets to pay for TNK-BP. Rosneft should expect to take over TNK-BP entirely within the next six months, he said.

Rosneft shares jumped more than 3 percent on the announcement but rolled back to trade only 1.6 percent higher at 218 rubles per share.

BP shares were down 0.3 percent to 449 pence following the announcement.

Russia is an important part of BP's business, accounting for a quarter of its oil production. BP Chief Executive Bob Dudley has looked to the country's vast oil resources as a key ingredient to the company's recovery from the disastrous oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. BP is set to have two seats on Rosneft's nine-member board.

Ildar Davletshin, an oil and gas analyst at Renaissance Capital, said the deal "strategically looks very positive for BP" which has replaced "a private partner for a strategic national company which has much bigger access to resources in Russia and has much bigger political support in this country."

Davletshin said the deal should help ease concerns that Rosneft's strategy is driven by political considerations.

Rosneft has been involved in an array of overseas projects largely viewed as unprofitable but designed to prop up the Kremlin's foreign policy.

Davletshin said Rosneft will more likely be run "in the interests of shareholders" rather than serving the Kremlin's political agenda since BP will have two board members.

The TNK-BP joint venture has been troublesome ? albeit lucrative ? for BP. Dudley served as TNK-BP's chief executive until summer 2008 when he was forced to leave Russia after being denied a visa. Dudley and TNK-BP's Russian billionaire shareholders had serious disagreements over the company's long-term strategy and Dudley subsequently complained that the Russian shareholders were behind a campaign of harassment.

In 2011, relations worsened when BP tried to strike a separate partnership with Rosneft to explore for oil beneath the Arctic Ocean. AAR subsequently sued and got the deal blocked, alarming BP investors.

Dudley said in the statement on Monday that "BP intends to be a long-term investor in Rosneft - an investment which I believe will deliver value for our shareholders over the next decade and beyond."

Sechin sounded optimistic about their tie-up with BP, saying that his company "would benefit from BP's experience and its track record of implementing best international practices in Russia."

Ratings agency Fitch last week warned Rosneft of a possible rating downgrade because of the TNK-BP deal. Fitch said the Russian company should have no problems raising the money to pay for 50 percent, but said the purchase of the other 50 percent could require so much borrowing that it could lead to a downgrade.

?Beetlejuice? sparks? Meteor shower brings 'shooting stars' and 'earthgrazers'

The increasing intensity of the annual Orionid meteor shower will be on full display Saturday night and Sunday morning as most of the US faces a cold, clear, moonless night ? the perfect celestial screen.

Projected clear skies and low moonlight across much of the country Saturday night and Sunday morning will help fans of celestial phenomena witness a peak of whizzing visitors across the sky as part of the annual Orionid meteor shower.

Sky gazers can expect as many as 60 meteors an hour as the earth crashes into icy remnants abandoned by Halley?s Comet when it shot by the planet in 1986. The meteor shower will originate near the orange-glowing Betelgeuse star that makes up the right shoulder of Orion (The Hunter), most easily found by his conspicuous belt of stars.

The objects are boulders of ice and rock breaking into the atmosphere at about 148,000 miles per hour. Most sizzle and burn, creating ?shooting stars? and even ?earthgrazers? that span the sky. Larger chunks may actually explode into fireballs loud enough to hear down here on earth.

(A large chunk of asteroid that entered the atmosphere and exploded just off the coast of northern California on Wednesday, in some cases shaking houses, was likely not part of the Orionids, NASA says.)

According to Weather.com, large sections of the Atlantic, the South, the Midwest, and Coastal West are likely to see crystal clear skies overnight. The moon has just begun to wax, meaning moonlight interference will be low.

Philosophers have long pondered the stars, but the Orionids usually inspire poetics even among the country?s most hardened space scientists. (For others who want to gush or chat, NASA will have its experts on hand starting Saturday night at this link.)

?The Orionid meteor shower isn?t the strongest, but it?s one of the most beautiful showers of the year,? says Bill Cooke, head of NASA?s Meteoroid Environment Office.

Tony Phillips, who blogs at spaceweather.com, explains why in a NASA post.

?The shower is framed by some of the brightest stars and planets in the heavens,? he writes. ?Constellations such as Taurus, Gemini, and Orion provide a glittering backdrop for the display. But that?s not all. This year, Venus and Jupiter have moved into position with Sirius, the Dog Star, to form a bright triangle in the eastern pre-dawn sky. On the morning of Oct 21st, blazing pieces of Halley?s Comet will cut straight through the heart of this celestial triad.?

NASA has a few suggestions for how to optimize the show. The best display is likely to be two hours before sunrise, when Orion will be straight overhead. The meteors will burst from near Betelgeuse, but will spray across the entire sky. And remember: don?t blink.

?Be prepared for speed,? says Mr. Cooke, according to NASA. ?Only the November Leonids are faster.?

Skin Cancer Foundation helps children stay sun-safe at school

Because many schools don?t allow students to use sunscreen or wear a hat outdoors during the school day without written permission from a physician, The Skin Cancer Foundation has created a sun protection form that parents and doctors can sign, allowing students to bring these items to school, apply and use as needed. The form is available at www.skincancer.org/schoolnote.

?Every child should have access to proper sun protection at school,? says Perry Robins, MD, President of The Skin Cancer Foundation. ?Alarmingly, California is the only state with legislation that gives children the right to take sun protection measures at school. Given the absence of similar legislation in other states, the Foundation hopes to fill this void by providing parents with the necessary means to ensure their children stay safe in the sun at school.?

During a typical school day, it?s not unusual for children to receive a significant amount of sun exposure. Children in elementary school typically have outdoor recess between 10:00am and 2:00pm, a time when the sun is especially intense.

Proper sun protection in childhood can drastically reduce the risk of developing skin cancer as an adult. Suffering just one blistering sunburn in childhood or adolescence more than doubles a person?s risk of developing melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer, later in life.

The Skin Cancer Foundation has always recommended that everyone, regardless of age and skin color, adopt a complete sun protection regimen. At school, children should be able to cover-up with protective clothing, including broad-brimmed hats and UV-blocking sunglasses. Additionally, they should wear a broad-spectrum SPF 15 sunscreen every day, and be allowed to bring it to school for easy reapplication.

The Skin Cancer Foundation?s sun protection form ensures that children have access to recommended sun safety measures. The Skin Cancer Foundation strives to educate children about the dangers of skin cancer and the need for early detection and prevention.

The Foundation recently debuted Sun Smart U, an interactive education program that includes a robust website for teachers and a free downloadable lesson plan.

Sun Smart U was designed in accordance with national health standards for middle and high school students and may be particularly useful to health and physical education teachers.

Through Sun Smart U, students learn about the dangers of tanning through the real-life story of a young woman with Stage III melanoma, and the importance of incorporating a proper sun protection regimen into their everyday lifestyles.?

Column: Domestic violence is more than personal - The Salem News

Domestic violence is not a personal concern, but rather a social problem that requires a community response if we are to change the dynamics of abuse relationships. It is commonly defined as the use of power to control another person and ? according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the National Institute of Justice ? an estimated 24 percent of all women in the United States have been victims at some point in their lifetimes. The Bureau of Justice Statistics further reports that on average more than three women and one man are murdered by their intimate partners in the United States every day.

The health-related costs are equally staggering. Nearly $6 billion is spent annually on health care costs related to domestic violence. Adults, unfortunately, are not the only victims, for children are also heavily affected. Some studies suggest that as many as 10 million children witness some form of domestic violence each year; approximately 50 percent of perpetrators who abuse their partners also abuse their children.

Since the beginning of the battered women?s movement in the 1970s, domestic violence advocates have recognized that the ?personal is political,? and have worked diligently for a response that acknowledges the disparity in power that exists in many relationships. Social activist Ellen Pence and social worker Michael Paymar have clearly identified domestic violence as a community problem. Their understanding that domestic violence is the manifestation of cultural systems of power and control within a relationship have, in fact, changed the way service providers respond to the problem.

The development of the coordinated community response intervention and the Duluth Model are culturally relevant and effective interventions that have changed the ways in which we respond to domestic violence. It has also helped us shift our thinking from simply providing resources to victims to figuring out how ? as communities ? we can hold abusers accountable. The coordinated community response intervention has also changed our perceptions about who bears the responsibility for responding to problems of domestic violence by inviting everyone to the table to be part of ending it.

Service providers, including advocates for domestic abuse victims, police officers and health care workers, continue to work diligently to provide safety to those who are in abusive relationships and to hold those causing the harm accountable. That, unfortunately, is not enough. Because domestic violence is not simply a relationship problem, it becomes everyone?s responsibility to be part of the solution.

How can we ? as members of the community ? help? As a first step, we must teach ourselves to recognize possible signs, those ?red flags? of abusive relationships. These may include such things as jealousy, controlling behavior and isolation. If you recognize these red flags within your own relationship, or in the relationships of those to whom you are close, help is available through local domestic violence organizations, your health care provider and the National Domestic Violence Hotline, which can be reached toll-free at 800-799-SAFE (7233) or on the Internet at www.thehotline.org.

The hotline website can be exited safely without leaving any evidence of a visit on one?s computer. If you recognize any of these red flags as characteristics of a relationship that a friend, family member or co-worker is experiencing, don?t be afraid to let them know that you are concerned for their safety. Acknowledge that this is a difficult, complex, scary situation, but that you are available for support. Don?t try to fix the problem. Recognize it as domestic violence and refer your friend or family member to a local domestic violence agency for help.

Changing the acceptance of domestic violence within our community is everyone?s responsibility. Recognizing the red flags and referring a victim to a domestic violence organization for help may not only save someone?s life; it is also an important step to changing our community.

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Stop the violence.

Susan Boyle's fairy tale dream tempered by reality

LONDON (AP) ? She dreamed a dream, and it came true. But what happened next for Susan Boyle?

The middle-aged church volunteer from a small town in Scotland became an instant global celebrity in 2009 with her heart-stopping rendition of the "Les Miserables" number "I Dreamed a Dream" on a TV talent show.

A week is a long time in showbiz ? and in our hyper-speed online age three and a half years is an eternity ? but Boyle is still going strong. She has sold millions of records, received an honorary doctorate, sung for Pope Benedict XVI and performed in Las Vegas. A stage musical about her life has played to enthusiastic crowds across Britain and is headed for Australia, and next month she releases her fourth album, "Standing Ovation."

But the 51-year-old singer who entered the TV talent contest to make her late mother proud is remarkably unchanged. She's still a bit frumpy, though she's acquired a new hairdo, more expensive clothes and a makeover. She still lives in her down-at-heel home town, has outbursts of anger and struggles to overcome her nerves before live performances.

It's a fairy tale, yes, but with dark shadows lurking in the corners.

"People can't accept that you can dream a dream, but part of the dream is also a nightmare," said Elaine C. Smith, a Scottish actress who knows Boyle and plays her in the biographical stage show "I Dreamed a Dream."

"Fairy dust comes out, but shrapnel comes out as well."

Boyle now has a car and chauffeur to take her to appointments, but she sticks close to familiar places and routines. She has bought a new house, a modern four-bedroom two-story in Blackburn that cost 300,000 pounds ($480,000), but locals say she often stays in the modest row house she grew up in.

And she still shows up occasionally to sing karaoke at The Crown pub.

"She belts them out like she used to and is not averse to a duet," said 20-year-old local Helen Cameron. "It's nice that this has not changed her. I think she's under a lot of pressure normally. Here she can be herself."

As well as having the support of her community, Boyle is well protected by her manager, Andy Stephens, and a close circle of friends and family ? a factor that helps act as a "psychological vaccine" against the pressures of sudden fame, according to Cary Cooper, professor of psychology and health at Lancaster University.

"If you don't have the proper social support system to protect you, your celebrity status can cause you enormous stress," said Cooper, who has studied the relationship between celebrity and stress. "She is still rooted in her friends and people who know her. Most celebrities aren't."

Boyle's life changed in a few minutes when her first appearance on "Britain's Got Talent" was broadcast in April 2009. The soaring voice emerging from the dowdy, frizzy-haired figure; the audience titters turning to gasps; the shocked faces of Simon Cowell and the other judges ? it was artfully staged television, but also a moment of genuine emotion.

"We judged her. Anybody who says they didn't is telling lies," Smith said. "She walked on and opened her mouth, and within minutes everybody watching was in tears."

The Internet clip went around the world, and keeps on going. On YouTube alone it has been viewed more than 106 million times.

Boyle's first album, "I Dreamed a Dream," topped both the U.K. and U.S. charts. So did her second, "The Gift."

Although Boyle's covers of pop classics and musical theater standards rarely make critics swoon, her three albums collectively have sold more than 14 million copies.

This month she's sung on "Dancing With the Stars" in the U.S. and performed in Las Vegas with Donny Osmond, a childhood idol.

It's a long way from Boyle's home town of Blackburn, a community of about 5,000 people 20 miles (32 kilometers) west of Edinburgh that lies in one of Britain's most deprived areas.

The youngest of nine children of a devout Roman Catholic family, Boyle had learning difficulties as a child, the result of oxygen deprivation at birth. She struggled in school and was bullied by other children.

She left school with few qualifications, never married ? though she later said she'd exaggerated in telling the "Britain's Got Talent" judges she'd "never been kissed" ? and spent years caring for her widowed mother, Bridget, who died in 2007.

The thing that gave her the greatest pleasure was singing, in church or during karaoke nights at the pub.

She has said she entered "Britain's Got Talent" in memory of her late mother, "to show her I could do something with my life."

All did not all go smoothly after her astonishing debut. During the final stages of the competition she got into a dustup with two reporters.

Although she was widely expected to win the 100,000 pound ($160,000) prize, she ended up coming second to dance troupe Diversity. After the series ended, she checked into the Priory, rehab clinic to the stars, to be treated for nervous exhaustion.

She still has outbursts of temper, and has said she still suffers anxiety when singing live before audiences.

"When I first went for 'Britain's Got Talent' I had such a feeling of failure and that's still part of me," Boyle said in an interview last year with the Daily Mail newspaper. "It's hard when that's been the pattern of your life. It's hard to believe those patterns have been broken."

Smith said Boyle's struggles ? reflected in the bittersweet tone of the stage show ? disappoint some of the singer's fans.

"They want the dream to come true and her life to be perfect," she said.

But Smith said Boyle's flaws are part of what makes her a star. After all, "you didn't love Judy Garland because she was perfect."

"This is a woman who is conquering the real fears she has," Smith said.

Hybrid cars are regarded as to be the auto of tomorrow. Due to the fact of the benefits it can give you, you will definitely want to get one for your personal. In fact, much more and a lot more people are now considering promoting their traditional automobile and obtain a hybrid automobile. So, why is it that a lot more and much more people favor finding a hybrid car instead of a standard automobile even if hybrid automobile retail costs are far far more expensive?

The answer to this is that these people are considering of the lengthy term positive aspects that a hybrid vehicle can give. With a hybrid automobile, you can cut fuel consumption in half compared to typical automobiles. Hybrid vehicles will be in a position to give you optimum fuel efficiency. It will be capable to give you far better mileage to the gallon. Just imagine, with a hybrid automobile, you can get much more than 60 miles to the gallon of gasoline.

This is since hybrid cars run on two engines. 1 is the typical internal combustion engine that you will discover in standard vehicles and the other is the electric motor and batteries. Hybrid automobiles are generally cars that mix electric energy and gasoline power. By combining these two to energy your car, it will run quieter, cleaner and far much more effective than conventional automobiles. These are the main benefits of hybrid vehicles.

Another advantage is that you will be capable to save more cash from tax breaks imposed by the US government to hybrid car customers and purchasers. If you personal a hybrid auto, you will be capable to appreciate tax breaks. Also, you will be in a position to take pleasure in totally free parking and other incentives that the government imposed on hybrid automobile owners.

Now that you know about the principal pros of the hybrid automobiles, you also need to have to know what the cons of hybrid automobiles are.

Men and women have been buying hybrid vehicles simply because of the ability of saving a lot of income from fuel consumption. Even so, the main benefit of hybrid automobiles, which is the electric motor, is also its downfall. When a hybrid car is involved in an accident it will be difficult for you and the rescuers to get you out of the automobile due to the fact of the dangers of electrocution. Hybrid vehicles carry big amounts of voltage. When it gets involved in an accident, wires from the battery may possibly tear off and will be potentially harmful to take care of.

An additional disadvantage of hybrid automobiles is that the retail cost is larger than conventional automobiles in the very same weight class. Even so, the hybrid car can counter this disadvantage by enabling customers to conserve money in a long term basis. When you look at it in an extended term basis, hybrid cars tend to be cheaper than traditional automobiles. Attempt and compute the amount of gasoline both automobiles will consume during its lifetime and add it to the retail cost of the automobile. You will see that the traditional car will tend to be far more high-priced than hybrid automobiles when you look at it in an extended phrase basis.

These are the pros and cons of hybrid cars. You can see that it contains far more positive aspects than disadvantages. Most hybrid cars right now are now integrated with the most current engineering in vehicle security. So, if you are preparing to buy a car, assume hybrid.

Protesters block roads in Lebanon after car bomb

BEIRUT (AP) ? Protesters burned tires and set up roadblocks around Lebanon on Saturday in a sign of boiling anger over a massive car bomb that killed a top security official and seven other people a day earlier ? a devastating attack that threatened to bring Syria's civil war to Lebanon.

The Lebanese Cabinet was scheduled to hold an emergency meeting Saturday as the country's opposition called for Prime Minister Najib Mikati to resign. The state-run National News Agency said security commanders would attend the meeting to discuss how to keep the peace.

The government declared a national day of mourning for the victims, who included Brig. Gen. Wissam al-Hassan, head of the intelligence division of Lebanon's domestic security forces. Dozens were wounded in Friday's blast in Beirut's mainly Christian Achrafieh neighborhood.

Many observers said the attack appeared to have links to the Syrian civil war, which has been raging for 19 months. Al-Hassan, 47, headed an investigation over the summer that led to the arrest of former Information Minister Michel Samaha, one of Syrian President Bashar Assad's most loyal allies in Lebanon.

Samaha, who is in custody, is accused of plotting a campaign of bombings and assassinations to spread sectarian violence in Lebanon at Syria's behest. Also indicted in the August sweep was Syrian Brig. Gen. Ali Mamlouk, one of Assad's highest aides.

Lebanon's fractious politics are closely entwined with Syria's. The countries share a web of political and sectarian ties and rivalries, often causing events on one side of the border to echo on the other. Lebanon's opposition is an anti-Syrian bloc, while the prime minister and much of the government are pro-Syrian.

The civil war in Syria has laid bare Lebanon's sectarian tensions as well.

Many of Lebanon's Sunnis have backed Syria's mainly Sunni rebels, while Shiites have tended to back Assad. Al-Hassan was a Sunni whose stances were widely seen to oppose Syria and the country's most powerful ally in Lebanon, the Shiite militant group Hezbollah.

On Friday, protesters in mostly Sunni areas closed roads with burning tires and rocks in Beirut, the southern city of Sidon, the northern city of Tripoli and several towns in the eastern Bekaa Valley.

The highway linking central Beirut with the city's international airport was closed, as well as the highway that links the capital with Syria, the officials said on condition of anonymity in line with regulations.

Rafik Khoury, editor of the independent Al-Anwar daily, said the assassination was an attempt to draw Lebanon into the conflict in Syria, which has been the most serious threat to the Assad family's 40-year dynasty.

"The side that carried the assassination knows the reactions and dangerous repercussions and is betting that it will happen. Strife is wanted in Lebanon," Khoury wrote.

Physicists crack another piece of the glass puzzle

Tuesday, October 16, 2012

When it comes to physics, glass lacks transparency. No one has been able to see what's happening at the molecular level as a super-cooled liquid approaches the glass state ? until now. Emory University physicists have made a movie of particle motion during this mysterious transition.

Their findings, showing how the rotation of the particles becomes decoupled from their movement through space, are being published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of the Sciences.

"Cooling a glass from a liquid into a highly viscous state fundamentally changes the nature of particle diffusion," says Emory physicist Eric Weeks, whose lab conducted the research. "We have provided the first direct observation of how the particles move and tumble through space during this transition, a key piece to a major puzzle in condensed matter physics."

Weeks specializes in "soft condensed materials," substances that cannot be pinned down on the molecular level as a solid or liquid, including everyday substances such as toothpaste, peanut butter, shaving cream, plastic and glass.

Scientists fully understand the process of water turning to ice. As the temperature cools, the movement of the water molecules slows. At 32 F, the molecules lock into crystal lattices, solidifying into ice.

In contrast, the molecules of glasses do not crystallize. The movement of the glass molecules slows as the temperature cools, but they never lock into crystal patterns. Instead, they jumble up and gradually become glassier, or more viscous. No one understands exactly why.

The phenomenon leaves physicists to ponder the molecular question of whether glass is a solid, or merely an extremely slow-moving liquid.

This purely technical physics question has stoked a popular misconception: That the glass in the windowpanes of some centuries-old buildings is thicker at the bottom because the glass flowed downward over time. "The real reason the bottom is thicker is because they hadn't yet learned how to make perfectly flat panes of glass," Weeks says. "For practical purposes, glass is a solid and it will not flow, even over centuries. But there is a kernel of truth in this urban legend: Glasses are different than other solid materials. "

To explore what makes glasses different, the Weeks lab uses mixtures of water and tiny plastic balls, each about the size of the nucleus of a cell. This model system acts like a glass when the particle concentration is increased.

A major drawback to this model system is that actual glass molecules are not spherical, but irregularly shaped.

"When the hot molten liquid that forms a glass cools down, it's not just that the viscosity becomes enormous, growing by a factor of a billion, there is something different about how the molecules are moving," Weeks says. "We wanted to set up an experiment that would allow us to see that movement, but spheres move differently than irregular shapes."

In 2011, however, the physics lab of David Pine, at New York University, developed a way to join clusters of these tiny plastic balls together to form tetrahedrons.

Kazem Edmond, while a graduate student at Emory, added these tetrahedral particles to the glass model system and led the experiments. Using a confocal microscope, he digitally scanned the samples as the viscosity increased, creating up to 100 images per second. The result was three-dimensional movies that showed the movement and the behavior of the tetrahedrons as the system reached a glassy state.

The movie and data from the experiment provide the first clear picture of the particle dynamics for glass formation. As the liquid grows slightly more viscous, both rotational and directional particle motion slows. The amount of rotation and the directional movements of the particles remain correlated.

"Normally, these two types of motion are highly coupled," Weeks says. "This remains true until the system reaches a viscosity on the verge of being glass. Then the rotation and directional movements become decoupled: The rotation starts slowing down more."

He uses a gridlocked parking lot as an analogy for how the particles are behaving. "You can't turn your car around, because it's not a sphere shape and you would bump into your neighbors. You have to wait until a car in front of you moves, and then you can drive a bit in that direction. This is directional movement, and if you can make a bunch of these, you may eventually be able to turn your car. But turning in a crowded parking lot is still much harder than moving in a straight line."

Previous research has inferred this decoupling of movement by experimenting with actual molecular glasses. The Weeks lab used a simple model system to scale up glassy material so that you can actually watch the decoupling process happening.

"Glass is important in everyday life," Weeks says. "The more we understand its fundamental nature, the more we may be able to improve it and use it in different ways. One reason that smart phones are getting smaller and better, for example, is that stronger and thinner glass is being developed."
