Japan and China to start direct currency trading | News Hours BD ...

Japan said today it will start direct currency trading with China for the first time, scrapping the dollar as an intermediary unit to boost ties between the two Asian economic giants.

The move, which will boost trade and investment between the traditional rivals, marks the first time Beijing has allowed a major currency other than the greenback to trade directly with the yuan.

?From June 1, the yen-yuan exchange rate will be constantly indicated in both markets, facilitating full-fledged direct exchange trading,? Japan?s Finance Minister Jun Azumi told a regular press briefing.

By not using the dollar as an intermediate currency ?we can lower transaction costs and reduce settlement risks at financial institutions as well as making both nations? currencies more useful?, he added.

The announcement also comes as China introduces measures as part of a long-term goal of internationalising its currency to rival the dollar.

Beijing described Tuesday?s move as an ?important step? in ?strengthening cooperation between China and Japan in developing financial markets and mutually promoting direct trading between the two currencies based on market principle.?

?The People?s Bank of China actively supports (the move),? said a statement issued by the China Foreign Exchange Trade System, the central bank?s forex arm.

The Chinese central bank earlier Tuesday fixed a rate of 7.9480 yuan for every 100 yen, Dow Jones Newswires reported.

The yen trades freely against the greenback on global foreign-exchange markets, with the dollar buying 79.52 yen in Asian trade on Tuesday.

However the yuan is allowed to move within only a tight range against the dollar.

China overtook Japan to become the world?s second-largest economy in 2010, and the neighbours are forging closer business ties despite frequent diplomatic spats over territorial claims and lingering historical animosities.

China is Japan?s largest trading partner, but about 60 percent of their mutual trade is denominated in US dollars.

In March, Japan said it had won approval from Beijing to buy Chinese government bonds for the first time ? Beijing does not allow investors to freely purchase its debt, requiring official approval instead.

Tokyo said it got the green light to buy Chinese government bond issues worth about 65 billion yuan ($10.25 billion), a relatively small amount, with Azumi saying at the time that the investment was ?an appropriate amount for the initial purpose of strengthening bilateral economic ties?.

The economic powerhouses have also agreed to promote the use of their currencies in bilateral transactions ? such as yuan- denominated foreign direct investment by Japanese companies in China ? to reduce foreign exchange risks.

The yen, meanwhile, hit historic highs against the dollar last year, denting exporters whose products become less competitive overseas when the currency strengthens.

Japanese finance officials have vowed to step into currency markets again to tame the value of the unit, which is increasingly seen as a safe-haven currency as the euro takes a hit owing to worries about the debt-hit eurozone.

Ghostly gamma-ray beams blast from Milky Way's center

ScienceDaily (May 29, 2012) ? As galaxies go, our Milky Way is pretty quiet. Active galaxies have cores that glow brightly, powered by supermassive black holes swallowing material, and often spit twin jets in opposite directions. In contrast, the Milky Way's center shows little activity. But it wasn't always so peaceful. New evidence of ghostly gamma-ray beams suggests that the Milky Way's central black hole was much more active in the past.

"These faint jets are a ghost or after-image of what existed a million years ago," said Meng Su, an astronomer at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics (CfA), and lead author of a new paper in the Astrophysical Journal.

"They strengthen the case for an active galactic nucleus in the Milky Way's relatively recent past," he added.

The two beams, or jets, were revealed by NASA's Fermi space telescope. They extend from the galactic center to a distance of 27,000 light-years above and below the galactic plane. They are the first such gamma-ray jets ever found, and the only ones close enough to resolve with Fermi.

The newfound jets may be related to mysterious gamma-ray bubbles that Fermi detected in 2010. Those bubbles also stretch 27,000 light-years from the center of the Milky Way. However, where the bubbles are perpendicular to the galactic plane, the gamma-ray jets are tilted at an angle of 15 degrees. This may reflect a tilt of the accretion disk surrounding the supermassive black hole.

"The central accretion disk can warp as it spirals in toward the black hole, under the influence of the black hole's spin," explained co-author Douglas Finkbeiner of the CfA. "The magnetic field embedded in the disk therefore accelerates the jet material along the spin axis of the black hole, which may not be aligned with the Milky Way."

The two structures also formed differently. The jets were produced when plasma squirted out from the galactic center, following a corkscrew-like magnetic field that kept it tightly focused. The gamma-ray bubbles likely were created by a "wind" of hot matter blowing outward from the black hole's accretion disk. As a result, they are much broader than the narrow jets.

Both the jets and bubbles are powered by inverse Compton scattering. In that process, electrons moving near the speed of light collide with low-energy light, such as radio or infrared photons. The collision increases the energy of the photons into the gamma-ray part of the electromagnetic spectrum.

The discovery leaves open the question of when the Milky Way was last active. A minimum age can be calculated by dividing the jet's 27,000-light-year length by its approximate speed. However, it may have persisted for much longer.

"These jets probably flickered on and off as the supermassive black hole alternately gulped and sipped material," said Finkbeiner.

It would take a tremendous influx of matter for the galactic core to fire up again. Finkbeiner estimates that a molecular cloud weighing about 10,000 times as much as the Sun would be required.

"Shoving 10,000 suns into the black hole at once would do the trick. Black holes are messy eaters, so some of that material would spew out and power the jets," he said.

The Diamond Jubilee/Coronation Chick Pea Salad | The Veggie Blog

The whole of UK will be enjoying an extended four day weekend to celebrate the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II. The Queen?s coronation took place on 2nd June 1953 (she came to throne in February of the previous year). Sixty years on the throne deserve a recognition, many celebrations are planned including street parties all around the country. And of course we celebrate best with some great food (and drink) in hand.

Probably the most famous dish, from the two Coronation Banquets in 1953, is the Coronation Chicken. The recipe was created by Constance Spry and Rosemary Huyme. Constance suggested to make curried creamy chicken and Rosemary (the chef) executed the idea. For months now Coronation Chicken inspired dishes have been on the shelves of supermarkets, you can choose from the traditional chicken, veggie rice version or a Coronation dip. There even is a coronation ice-cream in an ice-cream shop in London.

I felt inspired and created my own plant based version of the famous dish. As in the original version I used a curry powder. When I made curries I blend my own spices but the generic curry powder taste is what makes this recipe traditional as that is what they would use in 1953. Just make sure you use a good quality one, I get mine in an Asian shop. You can also use a good curry paste.

The original version is mayo heavy and I didn?t want to just open a jar and replace the regular mayo with a vegan one. Therefore a tofu/cashew dressing was born, the quantities given make more than you will need but it tastes great and you will find other uses (great with new potatoes). The salad ingredients can be easily doubled to make enough to feed a crowd, it makes a great potluck dish.

Here is to the Queen, who has kept going with seemingly boundless energy through all the ups and downs in the 60 years of her rule. I will be raising a glass of Pimm?s to her health.

CORONATION CHICKPEA SALAD

.

Salad:

1/3 cup (60g) wild rice

1/2 Tbs rapeseed/canola or olive oil

1 small to medium red onion, finely diced

2 tsp mild curry powder

1 Tbs tomato puree

1 tin of chickpeas, drained

2 Tbs water

2 Tbs raisins

6 dried apricots, cut into roughly raisin size

4 spring onions, white part only, finely sliced

handful of toasted flaked almonds

handful of fresh coriander chopped

Dressing:

1/2 cup (60ml) water

1/2 cup cashew nuts

1/2 pack of silken tofu (about 170g ? 6oz)

1 heaped Tbs mango chutney

good pinch of saffron

2 Tbs lemon juice

pinch of salt

Method:

First cook the rice in 1 and 1/2 cups of water. Bring to a boil and simmer for 30 minutes. Drain and cool down. Set aside.

In a frying pan heat the oil, gently saute the onion until tender but do not brown, about 10 minutes.

Add the curry powder and cook for 30 seconds. Next add the tomato puree. Stir together.

Add the chickpeas and 2 Tbs of water to the frying pan. Season with salt. Cook gently until the water is evaporated and the chickpeas are coated with thick curry paste. Let the chickpeas cool down.

When the rice and chickpeas have cooled down place them into a bowl and add the rest of the salad ingredients.

To make the dressing blend all the ingredients in a blender till smooth. Pour some of the dressing over the salad, mix well. The salad should be very creamy. You can overdo the dressing a bit, it thickens in the fridge. Chill.

Decorate with some almonds and coriander. Enjoy!

I did it.? I bought the TIME magazine that everyone was talking about ? the one where the toddler is breastfeeding.

Why?? That?s a good question!

I guess I just wanted to see what all the hoopla was about.? It was being tweeted about, people were responding on blogs, Facebook had similar pictures posted, and I was like ?Okay? so what?s this about anyway??

The article talks extensively about Attachment Parenting a la Dr. Williams Sears who wrote the book called The Baby Book, which the Time magazine calls the AP Bible.? Let me say this, I love Attachment Parenting but guess what?? Dr. Sears did not invent it.? He is not a God.? He is a man that labeled what women have been doing for CENTURIES!

?Am I mom enough?? as the cover asks.

I am a mom, that?s it.

Sure, I breastfeed for an extended time, I babywear, I try to be a peaceful parent and don?t let my kids cry it out.? I do not do those things because the AP Bible tells me to.? I do those things because, instinctively, that is what feels right and good to me as a mother.? I am not trying to be an elitist when I encourage others to breastfeed or try cloth diapering or suggest using a baby carrier.? I am not trying to entice a ?Mommy War? when I say I don?t let my kids CIO.? I say these things because they feel right to me and if it feels right to someone else, I want them to know they are not alone if they want to parent this way.

Hot 97's annual Summer Jam lineup just got a little shadier: On Thursday morning (May 24), Eminem phoned into the New York hip-hop radio station to announce that his group Slaughterhouse will join Nicki Minaj, Rick Ross and 2 Chainz at New Jersey's MetLife Stadium on June 3.

This will be the first time Slaughterhouse will perform at the all-star hip-hop throwdown, so what advice does Marshall have for Joe Budden, Joell Ortiz, Crooked I and Royce da 5'9"? "Just be themselves," Eminem told Hot 97 and "Hip Hop Squares" host Peter Rosenberg. "I really feel like this group — hip-hop needs this, man, and I think people will see when this album comes out too."

King Mathers didn't hint at any surprise appearances. He is currently in the studio. "Right now, I'm finishing up everything on the Slaughterhouse album and kinda getting into my next record a little bit," he shared.

Em wouldn't dish any further on his upcoming seventh studio album, only saying that he is just "starting to toy" with the LP. Before that, SH will be dropping their Shady Records debut, Welcome to: Our House, in June.

"The album is done," Royce da 5'9" told MTV News on May 9 from the set of their "My Life" video. "In terms of vocal recording, we're done. Marshall is still in the process of mixing; we still got a couple of records that we're missing. We're on pace for June. Worst-case scenario, we're looking at July, but it's definitely coming — 100 percent."

Romantically Tied, Racially Tugged:

A Study of Dating and Committed Interracial Romantic Relationships and Dialectical Tensions

My name is Jessica Rose Johnson and I am currently a graduate student working on my thesis research in interracial relationships and communication. My advisor, Dr. Amy N. Heuman, and I are interested in researching the dialectical tensions between heterosexual interracial romantic couples and the external community (i.e., friends, family, and the greater public). The information we gather will assist couples and researchers in gaining a better understanding of how interracial couples negotiate external influences within their relationships and how these experiences impact the maintenance of the relationship.

For our study, we are seeking interracial heterosexual couples who are currently in an exclusive dating, heavily committed, or engaged relationship to participate in a joint interview process. We ask for volunteers who have been in an interracial heterosexual romantic relationship for over one year in length. For the purpose of this study, interracial means you and your partner are of different races/ethnicities (Black/African American, White, Hispanic, Asian, Native American, Multiracial, etc.). Participants must be over 18 years of age.

Results from the study will help provide communication scholars and relationship professionals with an understanding of how interracial romantic couples negotiate and enact relationship maintenance strategies in communication with each other and the external community. This information might also be used to improve the communication between those involved in such romantic relationships and assist in bringing further awareness to the experiences of couples in interracial heterosexual romantic relationships.

Qualified participants will engage in a face-to-face interview lasting approximately 45-90 minutes. Detailed measures will be taken to ensure all information and responses will be kept confidential. After the interview, participants will be contacted to schedule a time to review the emergent research themes via a process of member checking whereby couples to verify and clarify emergent themes and interpretations with their understandings of the experiences they shared within the interview process. You will be emailed to schedule a time to review transcripts and emergent themes once initial data analysis is completed. Participation is strictly voluntary. If at any point you and your partner feel uncomfortable or want to terminate participation, you may do so.

Return of the Vacuum Tube

It has more to do with reputation than with "can't be done otherwise". A 50 cent-a-pop DSP probably has enough power to simulate the good ol' vacuum tube sound.

Well, I guess we'll have to agree to disagree here. For 40 years I've worked at music stores and been in bands, never mind being an amp tech/designer/builder, even worked in avionics and military-related high-end electronics systems, heard many of the very best DSP studio rack processors made costing many thousands of dollars, and my ears and everything else I know and have learned so far during all this time convinces me that, although DSP has gotten much, much better compared to even 5 years ago, it hasn't arrived yet at the point where the human ear can't tell the difference.

DSP guitar tone, clean or overdrive/distortion/effects, does not sound like real tubes *yet*. They will probably get there, I'm not saying it won't happen, maybe quite soon. It's just not there yet.

There's one solid-state amplifier made starting in 1975 that sounds great for jazz guitar. The Roland JC-120 Jazz Chorus 120 amplifier. Beautiful clean sounds. It does have a distortion function, but *nobody* used it once they heard it!:)

Don't get me wrong. If you're in a local small-town working bar/dive band that is mostly there for the $40 to $80 a man per night, and not trying to impress anyone with your tone except the bar owner...just enough, that is, to pay you and keep you on the booking rotation, and you don't want to carry any more than absolutely necessary nor tie up more money than you absolutely have to in an amp, something like one of the "Line 6 Spider" combo amps will "get it done". Sorta like when old people...well, never mind.:-/

Those type of DSP solid state amps are also great for those just starting out, as it has a bunch of effects in software already, no effects pedals or rack effects, cords, etc to bother with, and they're dirt-cheap as amps go. If it breaks, throw it away and buy another just like a disposable lighter.

And yes, I do prefer the vacuum-tube amps, not only because of the sound, but also the warm feeling of old electronics:)

Here's my personal amp that I built recently.

4 tubes total. two 12AX7 dual-triode preamp tubes (one a parallel-triode preamp gain stage, the other is the "long-tailed pair" style dual triode inverter/driver tube) and two KT66 beam tetrode power tubes in cathode-biased push-pull Class AB, producing around 30 watts. Volume and Tone controls, Standby/On and Power On/Off toggles. That's it. It sounds fantastic. You can't find a Volume/Tone control setting combination that sounds bad. I keep finding wonderful new tones and sounds almost every time I play it.

The sealed-back dovetail pine cab finished with Tru-Oil gunstock finishing oil with a Baltic birch plywood baffle has a pair of Celestion G12T-75 12-inch 8 Ohm guitar speakers wired in parallel for a 4 Ohm total impedance. It sounds absolutely gorgeous. Combined with that amp, some serious guitar tone-heaven.

I took the amp head into the local Guitar Center store shortly after I'd finished it. They had *nothing* that sounded anywhere near that good. The manager finally noticed the small crowd gathering, and (gently) asked me to cease after he started hearing a couple people asking if I sold amps like that one.:D

Oh, and since you mentioned a "warm feeling from old electronics", here's a little something that's sure to make wherever it is at just a little warmer. And louder. A *LOT* louder.

Today?s jobless claims?report showed a notable declined to both initial and continued unemployment claims while seasonally adjusted initial claims continued to trend well below the closely watched 400K level.

Seasonally adjusted ?initial? declined to 370,000 claims from last week?s revised 372,000 claims while seasonally adjusted ?continued? claims declined by 29,000 resulting in an ?insured? unemployment rate of 2.6%.

Since the middle of 2008 though, two federal government sponsored ?extended? unemployment benefit programs (the ?extended benefits? and ?EUC 2008? from recent legislation) have been picking up claimants that have fallen off of the traditional unemployment benefits rolls.

Currently there are some 2.93 million people receiving federal ?extended? unemployment benefits.

Taken together with the latest 3.15 million people that are currently counted as receiving traditional continued unemployment benefits, there are 6.08 million people on state and federal unemployment rolls.
