Flashback: 1919 White Sox gave baseball -- and city -- a black eye

The season after a group of White Sox players threw the 1919 World Series, Shoeless Joe Jackson met a perplexed young fan after testifying before a Chicago grand jury. Jackson was the A-Rod of his day, a slugger whose graceful swing Babe Ruth looked to model, and the scandal attracted a media horde, including a reporter who wrote that the boy asked:

"It ain't true, is it, Joe?"

"Yes, kid, I'm afraid it is," Jackson was said to have answered.

Years afterward, Jackson claimed it never happened, and many scholars say it was fabricated, the product of the lax journalistic standards of the day. Still, it became the iconic story of the Black Sox scandal, overshadowing the real news from that day: Jackson telling the Tribune he had confessed to the grand jury that he'd gotten stiffed by a teammate for the better part of the $20,000 he was due for being in on in the fix: "All I got was $5,000 that Lefty Williams handed me in a dirty envelope."

Fact or fable, the image of a heartbroken boy passed into baseball legend and lore as a metaphor for the mixture of disappointment and disbelief fans suffer when betrayed by wayward heroes. A prosecutor drew upon it in the 1921 trial of Jackson and seven teammates for conspiring with gamblers to fix the Series, telling the jury, according to the Trib's account: "The public, the team owners and even the small boy playing on the sandlots have been swindled."

With last week's suspensions of Alex Rodriguez and 12 other major leaguers for using performance-enhancing drugs, the Black Sox of 1919 have once again become the benchmark against which other sports scandals are measured. It's an oft-told tale, fodder for movies like "Eight Men Out" and "Field of Dreams," and novels like Bernard Malamud's "The Natural."

If players' sky-high salaries and the pressure to live up to superstar expectations were factors in the current doping scandal ? Rodriguez stands to lose almost $31 million if his 211-game suspension sticks ? Shoeless Joe and his teammates were tempted to cheat by meager salaries and the callous treatment many players felt they received. While Jackson made $6,000 in 1919 (nearly $81,000 in today's dollars), Williams received just $2,625 ($35,000 inflation-adjusted). And an alternate theory of the "Black Sox" label holds that team owner Charles Comiskey, a notorious tightwad, refused to pay even for cleaning players' uniforms.

Nevertheless, the White Sox, World Series winners two years earlier, were heavy favorites going into the 1919 contest with the Cincinnati Reds, the National League's champions. "It seems to me that I have seen the Sox outfielders throw more runners out at home than all the rest of the American league outfielders put together," wrote longtime umpire Bill Evans in a Tribune opinion piece that gave the Series edge to the Sox.

But the Series opened poorly for the Sox, which wasn't an accident, as it turned out. Chicago's star pitcher, Eddie Cicotte, started on the mound and hit the Reds' leadoff batter in the back, the signal that the dirty deal was on. The Sox lost 9-1.

Game 2 wasn't much better, a 4-2 Chicago loss, but the Sox won Game 3.

In Game 4, the plotters again took control. In the fifth inning, a Reds batter hit a single that Jackson fielded and heaved home to keep a runner from scoring, but Cicotte cut off the throw, ostensibly to keep the batter from advancing. "There wasn't any occasion for Cicotte to intercept the throw," manager William J. "Kid" Gleason later complained to a Tribune reporter. The batter "had no more intention of going to second than I have of jumping in the lake." The Sox lost 2-0, and the Reds had a 3-1 Series lead.

After several more questionable plays, the Reds clinched the championship in the eighth game (a best-of-nine Series that year). Of the final game, the Tribune noted: "They burned up the White Sox 10-5 on the anniversary of the day Mrs. O'Leary's cow burned up nine-tenths of Chicago forty-eight years ago."

Rumors of a fix began immediately. Faced with speculation that his players hadn't tried to win, Comiskey offered a $10,000 reward for information that the Series was thrown. True to form, he refused to pay several claimants, reportedly including Jackson's wife, who ostensibly sent a letter because Shoeless Joe was illiterate. But the rumors continued, prompting a criminal investigation.

The tainted players returned for the 1920 season, and the team played well.

But in the fall, three players ? Jackson, Cicotte and Williams ? signed confessions, which went mysteriously missing. According to the Trib, the confessions were bought for $10,000 by Arnold Rothstein, the big-time New York gambler who had bankrolled the whole scheme. Evidently pleased that his name wasn't mentioned in the confessions, Rothstein tried to peddle them to the media, including the Tribune, which reported the offer to the state's attorney's office.

Comiskey then suspended those three players and five others believed to be part of the conspiracy, even though the team was in a pennant race. The Sox narrowly missed going to another World Series even without them.

When the trial finally opened in 1921 it was a circus, even by Chicago standards. A special prosecutor appointed to represent organized baseball joined the state's team. Rothstein didn't show, successfully arguing that he wasn't the same Arnold Rothstein named in the court papers. Over the defense's objections, the judge who had taken the missing confessions was allowed to describe them to the jury, though the players alternately said they had repudiated them or been promised immunity. Comiskey went ballistic when a defense attorney accused him of "contract jumping" ? leaving a team in the lurch for a few extra bucks ? during his playing days.

Surprisingly, the jury acquitted them, but Judge Kenesaw Mountain Landis, newly appointed baseball commissioner, confirmed Comiskey's suspensions ? permanently banning eight players from baseball. By that point the team's fortunes had tanked. They wouldn't be contenders for years to come.

Most of the banished players faded into obscurity, but Jackson's persistently loyal fans continued to petition for his reinstatement, even after he died in 1951. It was argued that he wasn't one of the players who organized the fix, that he was a simple country boy who didn't realize what he was getting into, that he clearly didn't play poorly (he hit .375 in the Series and committed no errors). His partisans have argued that a man deserves to be remembered for his best, not his worst, and that he deserves the benefit of the doubt. It was in that spirit that Tribune sports columnist Dave Condon placed a wreath on Shoeless Joe's grave in 1979.

Condon wrote that when the florist asked what the card should say, he suggested:

"Maybe it wasn't so, Joe."

Body in California fire is victim's son

(CNN) -

A massive manhunt that spanned 1,000 miles ended in gunfire in the Idaho wild late Saturday afternoon -- shots that ended the life of the family friend who was suspected of abducting 16-year-old Hannah Anderson and killing her mother and brother.

The teenager was rescued near Morehead Lake, Idaho, where an FBI tactical agent killed her alleged kidnapper, James DiMaggio, around 5:20 p.m (7:20 p.m. ET), authorities said.

"It's now healing time," Brett Anderson, Hannah's father, said in a message to CNN.

Hannah Anderson had last been seen in San Diego County, California, at her cheerleading practice August 3. The bodies of her mother, Christina Anderson, and 8-year-old brother, Ethan, were found the next day about 45 miles east in DiMaggio's Boulevard house; lab tests were needed to identify the boy because his remains were so badly charred.

That horror spurred a manhunt, which turned to central Idaho after a telling tip from a horseback rider and the discovery of DiMaggio's blue Nissan Versa in the Frank Church-River of No Return Wilderness, about 15 miles outside Cascade, Idaho.

By Saturday morning, there were more than 250 law enforcement agents on site scouring 300 square miles of rough terrain.

By late Saturday afternoon, they'd accomplished their first mission: finding DiMaggio and his alleged captive.

The pair's campsite was first spotted from the air, then law enforcement personnel moved in on the ground, said San Diego County Sheriff Bill Gore. He said that there had been a "confrontation," though authorities speaking a short time later in Idaho declined to say whether there had been a shootout.

However the scene unfolded, it ended with an FBI tactical agent fatally shooting the suspected murderer and kidnapper.

"Obviously we would have liked for Mr. DiMaggio to surrender and face justice in the court of law," Gore said. "But that's not going to be the case."

Saga starts in California, ends in Idaho

The suspect's car was found after a man on horseback reported he had a brief conversation with two campers in the Idaho wilderness on Wednesday.

The horseback rider was not aware of the manhunt at the time, but he called the Amber Alert tip line after he saw a news account that night and realized the pair matched the description of DiMaggio and Hannah Anderson, according to Ada County, Idaho, sheriff's office spokeswoman Andrea Dearden.

The rider's impression was that the pair "seemed odd," though he wasn't alarmed, she said.

"They did speak and exchange pleasantries. I don't think there was a lot of information exchanged," Dearden said. "He left the conversation believing they were camping in the area."

The rider said the man and girl were on foot, hiking with camping gear, Dearden said.

DiMaggio's car was found unoccupied Friday -- hidden by brush and its license plate removed -- spurring authorities to intensify their search in that area even further.

This massive effort included law enforcement personnel from a host of federal, state and local agencies, with Dearden saying they'd "use every single resource possible." Still, despite the numbers, they faced a daunting task given the expansive, rugged nature of the area.

Ultimately, DiMaggio was spotted and killed not far from where he left his car, according to Dearden.

His alleged captive didn't appear to have suffered significant physical injuries, though she was nonetheless helicoptered from the scene to a hospital, the sheriff's spokeswoman said.

"Hannah is safe, and that was our first priority from the very beginning," Valley County, Idaho, Sheriff Patti Bolen said.

She should be reunited Sunday morning with her father in Idaho, according to Gore.

In his text to CNN, Brett Anderson admitted to feeling a range of emotions upon hearing of his daughter's rescue soon after his wife and son's death.

"I am nervous excited saddened 4 my wife and son and worried what my daughter has been through," he wrote.

Kenyan president vows to find airport blaze culprits

NAIROBI (Reuters) - Kenya will find out who or what was responsible for a fire that destroyed parts of the capital's international airport, President Uhuru Kenyatta said on Friday as authorities scrambled to return east Africa's transport hub to normal operations.

Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, sub-Saharan Africa's fourth busiest airport, opened to all international flights on Friday for the first time since Wednesday's blaze but there was chaos at a makeshift terminal.

The fire gutted the cavernous arrivals hall and damaged some of the departures area, forcing the airport authorities to handle overseas passengers through a tiny domestic terminal, while domestic flights flew out of the cargo terminal.

"We want to find out who was responsible and why and we'll establish if anyone was culpable, including for gross negligence," Kenyatta told reporters at the airport, where parts of the wreckage still smoldered.

Officials say it is too early to say if arson or an accident was to blame. The Kenyan media has criticized the authorities for being slow to respond to the fire amid embarrassing reports that some first responders looted the airport as it burned.

Whether the fire deals a crushing blow to Kenya's reputation as a regional gateway depends on how quickly the airport can return to handling more than 16,000 passengers a day, analysts say.

Kenyatta said a temporary terminal with a capacity of 2.5 million people - or 6,850 people per day - would be constructed within weeks while the authorities would try to fast-track the construction of a new terminal due to open in March.

On Friday, long queues and a lack of information frustrated many passengers.

"I have two (medical) machines in my body that make my body work and I am having to go through this," complained American tourist Reba Harrison.

Fidelity Contrafund sours on Apple, bolsters bet on Tesla

BOSTON: Fidelity Contrafund manager Will Danoff cut his stake in Apple Inc by 28 percent during the first half of the year, citing the iPhone maker's "slowing growth profile."

The star stockpicker remained bullish on Google Inc and on Tesla Motors Inc's "disruptive technology and superior business model."

"Reflective of the company's slowing growth profile, Apple moved from the fund's top position a year ago to the third spot as we reduced our stake in the company," Danoff said in his monthly commentary for investors. He runs the $94 billion Contrafund for Fidelity Investments in Boston.

Danoff has been trimming his stake in Apple since last year. Google is now his largest holding at 6 percent of net assets. Danoff also said he increased his position in electric car maker Tesla, "a firm we believed was fundamentally reengineering the automobile for the first time in decades."

(AP) ? The Missile lived up to his nickname.

James Magnussen of Australia posted the fastest preliminaries time in the 100-meter freestyle at the world swimming championships Wednesday, nearly a second ahead of the next qualifier.

Looks like he's put the disappointment of the Olympics behind him. Magnussen was a huge favorite in London but only got a silver in the 100 free behind American Nathan Adrian ? and didn't even win a medal in his other two events.

"I'm just keeping my emotions out of it this year," Magnussen said. "Each swim, I leave it in the water and look toward the next one."

The defending world champion touched in 47.71 seconds, far ahead of Konrad Czerniak of Poland at 48.50. Both Americans advanced to the semifinals, with Jimmy Feigen ninth-fastest in 48.86 and Adrian moving on in 12th at 48.93.

"I was a little surprised," Adrian said. "It was a little slower than I expected."

He said it had nothing to do with throwing up on the deck after the 4x100 free relay, in which he swam the leadoff leg for a U.S. team that finished second behind France.

"Everybody has thrown up before," Adrian said. "People are making a bigger deal out of it than necessary. I threw up. I feel fine now."

Feigen is trying to learn from his performance as the relay anchor, when he was caught by the French while admittedly spending too much time worrying about the teams right next to him, Russia and Australia. The bitterness of that defeat left some, including Michael Phelps, to question why the coaches put Feigen in such a crucial spot when he had the least international experience.

"I'm using that as a learning experience," Feigen said. "I wish it had turned out a little bit better, but I've got to take what happened and learn from it, put it toward some experience, find some good in the bad and do my best to rebound here in the 100."

Ryan Lochte is also in bounce-back mode after struggling in his first individual event. He missed a medal in the 200 free, laboring to the finish in fourth place, but awoke Wednesday with a new outlook.

Lochte won his heat in the 200 individual medley and put up the fifth-fastest time overall, 1 minutes, 58.46 seconds, to safely advance to the semifinals. Conor Dwyer also advanced in 10th.

"I felt like myself again," said Lochte, who was within striking distance of the leader, Hungary's Laszlo Cseh (1:57.70). "The first couple of days, I was worried about winning, worried about the times I went. It wasn't me. It wasn't Ryan Lochte. I woke up this morning without a care. I'm just going out there and having fun."

Missy Franklin never changes her outlook, but the perpetually bouncy teenager acknowledged not being quite at her best for the prelims of the 50 backstroke after a demanding double the previous night.

Coming off her second gold in the 100 back and a semifinal race in the 200 free, Franklin managed just the 13th-fastest time, 28.44, in the dash from one end of the pool to the other.

Fu Yuanhui of China was top qualifier in the non-Olympic event at 27.55.

"I'm a little sore this morning, I'm not going to lie," Franklin said. "But it was really fun. The 50 back is kind of just a fun event with no pressure. It's fun getting out there and seeing what can happen."

Franklin will go for her third gold of the meet in the evening in the 200 free, one of her most challenging races. She finished fourth at the London Olympics, just one-hundredth of a second away from a bronze, and has spent much of the past year trying to improve that stroke.

"It's going to be very, very tough tonight," Franklin said. "The field is so close. It really could come from anywhere. It's going to be a really good race."

Franklin is set to swim eight events in Barcelona, giving her a shot at joining Michael Phelps as the only swimmers to win eight golds at a major championship. She's 2 for 2 so far.

"It's going absolutely wonderful," she said. "I'm really, really proud of our team. They've been doing incredible."

In the other event of a short morning session, Mireia Belmonte of Spain led the women's 200 butterfly in 2:07.21. Hungary's Katinka Hosszu was next (2:07.51), while Americans Cammile Adams (sixth) and Madeline Dirado (13th) also advanced to the evening semifinals.

Also on tap in the evening, South Africa's Chad le Clos is the favorite in the 200 butterfly, but he figures to be challenged by American Tyler Clary and China's Wu Peng.

Sun Yang of China goes for his second gold of the championships in the 800 free after winning the 400 free with a dominating performance. Connor Jaeger of the United States was the top qualifier in the semifinals.

Finally, Australia's Christian Sprenger and South Africa's Cameron van der Burgh dual again in the 50 breaststroke after going 1-2 in the 100 breast.

Why Israel must make bold move to secure Palestinian peace talks ? and Israel's future

As preliminary peace talks with Israeli and Palestinian representatives begin in Washington, Israel must make a bold move to push negotiations forward and protect its security: declaring it has no sovereignty claims to key West Bank areas and facilitating voluntary relocation of Jewish settlers.

By Ami Ayalon, Gilead Sher, Orni Petruschka,?Op-ed contributors / July 30, 2013

Secretary of State John Kerry, Israel's President Shimon Peres, left, and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, right, participate in the World Economic Forum on the Middle East and North Africa in Jordan, May 26. Mr. Kerry begins preliminary talks with Israeli and Palestinian leaders this week, in hopes of re-starting the Middle East peace process.

Secretary of State John Kerry deserves enormous praise for getting Israeli and Palestinian officials to sit at the negotiating table together for preliminary talks this week in Washington ? and for even getting in the game of Israeli-Palestinian peacemaking at all.

' + google_ads[0].line2 + '

'; } else if (google_ads.length > 1) { ad_unit += ''; } } document.getElementById("ad_unit").innerHTML += ad_unit; google_adnum += google_ads.length; return; } var google_adnum = 0; google_ad_client = "pub-6743622525202572"; google_ad_output = 'js'; google_max_num_ads = '1'; google_feedback = "on"; google_ad_type = "text"; // google_adtest = "on"; google_image_size = '230x105'; google_skip = '0'; // -->

But for these talks to succeed, Israel must make a bold move that would help move negotiations forward, protect Israel?s security, and promote stability in the region. Given the upheaval in the Middle East and Israel?s hopes for a secure future, we cannot afford to wait for moves by the Palestinians or see whether negotiations succeed.

Mr. Kerry has been playing his cards with great skill and determination, even though the deck is stacked against him: a weakened Palestinian Authority; a divided Israeli coalition government beholden to West Bank settlers; and upheaval in neighboring countries where one of the only unifying elements is the populations? support of the Palestinian cause.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu wants to offer less to Palestinians than his predecessor, Ehud Olmert, did in 2008, while Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas cannot be more flexible than he was when he did not accept Mr. Olmert?s offer.

That?s why a bold move must be made now ? one that will increase the chances of the negotiation track succeeding while also providing a fallback plan that will prevent the situation from collapsing into the abyss should negotiations fail.

Mr. Netanyahu has already agreed to release dozens of Palestinian prisoners, most of them convicted terrorists, and press reports allege that he implicitly agreed to halt settlement construction outside the major settlement blocks. These are genuine confidence building measures that removed obstacles toward resuming the dialogue.

But more will be needed. Netanyahu should further declare that Israel has no sovereignty claims over West Bank areas east of the security fence. (This is the fence erected by Israel around the main West Bank settlement blocks and Jewish parts of Jerusalem in order to counter Palestinian suicide bombers, terrorists and hostilities.) Then Netanyahu should announce a voluntary evacuation, compensation, and absorption plan for those settlers who live east of the fence and who choose to relocate to Israel proper, thereby allowing for the two-state notion to become reality.

We at the Israeli non-profit organization Blue White Future, who are striving to secure the future of our country as the democratic nation state of the Jewish people, call these constructive independent steps. They do not create obstacles to reaching an agreement. To the contrary, they improve the prospects for achieving it.

NBA High-5: A noteworthy summer for Blazers assistant coaches David Vanterpool, Jay Triano

The five most interesting stories, rumors and notes in the NBA:

1. Interesting summer: One week from today will be the one-year anniversary of the Trail Blazers hiring Terry Stotts as coach. After last summer's long search, this summer has seemed much quieter on the Blazers' coaching front, other than Stotts having had both his hips replaced.

But there's been some interesting activity on Stotts' staff this off-season, starting with Kaleb Canales' departure for Dallas, and the hiring of Nate Tibbetts to replace him.

This week brought news about two other Blazers assistants. David Vanterpool has apparently emerged as a top candidate for the vacant 76ers head coach spot. The news was a surprise. Vanterpool, by most accounts, is well regarded within the Blazers, and some consider him a future head coach -- the key work being future.

Vanterpool came to the Blazers last year after serving as a scout for Oklahoma City for two years. He was considered more of a front-office guy for the Thunder and might have been in line to replace Rob Hennigan as OKC's assistant GM after Hennigan was hired as Orlando GM.

The 76ers must have loved Vanterpool's interview as he does not have any head coaching experience, unless you count the every-other-game he coached for the Blazers' summer league this month. Vanterpool alternated with Tibbetts, who has been a head coach in the D-League. Before summer league started, Stotts told The Oregonian's Joe Freeman of the arrangement:

?I think Nate has really grown a lot as a coach since I first saw him in the D-League six years ago. And it?s an opportunity for David, who doesn?t have that same experience.?

Meanwhile, Stotts' lead assistant, Jay Triano, has been away from the Blazers for stretches this summer as he fulfills his duties as Canada's national coach. The Canadian national program is entering what Steve Nash calls "the golden age of Canadian basketball," the Toronto Star's Ryan Wolstat reports.

As the National Post's Eric Koreen writes, Canada's hopes used to rest on whether Nash and Jamaal Magloire were willing or able to play. Now there's hope that Canada can become a major factor in international competition, starting with next summer's FIBA World Cup.

The national team started practice this week to prepare for a series of competitions, culminating in the FIBA Americas Championship in Venezuela in September at which the top four finishers earn berths in the World Cup. The training camp roster includes such NBA players as Tristan Thompson, Andrew Nicholson, Cory Joseph and Joel Anthony.

Two other players who are unable to participate because of injuries could really boost the team next summer: Anthony Bennett, drafted No. 1 by Cleveland in June's draft, and Kelly Olynyk, who went No. 13 to Boston. Also, Andrew Wiggins, who was considered the top recruit in college basketball and will be a freshman at Kansas, could also join future teams.

Triano is serving his second stint as Canada's coach, having held the position from 1999 to 2004, but says the difference in talent is immense.

?Back in 2000 we had two NBA players ? we had Steve and we had Todd MacCulloch and we were like, ?Man, these guys are great? and we built around them,?? Triano said at a news conference. ?Now we have so many other options. The depth in our country is great.?
?
2. Souring quickly:
It really didn't seem to take long for Brandon Jennings' relationship with the Bucks to sour. That relationship ended this week as the Bucks sent Jennings to Detroit in a sign-and-trade deal in which Jennings signed a three-year, $24 million contract, the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel's Charles Gardner reports.

The Bucks got point guard Brandon Knight, small forward Khris Middleton and center Viacheslav Kravtsov. Milwaukee's 2012-13 backcourt of Jennings and Monta Ellis has? been replaced by Knight and O.J. Mayo, with Gary Neal and Luke Ridnour also new to the Bucks.

Not sure the Eastern Conference is shaking in its boots.

For Jennings, the trade marks a new start. He's clearly a talented player, but his late-season clashes with interim coach Jim Boylan seemed to sour the franchise on him, as did his ludicrous prediction that Milwaukee would oust Miami in the playoffs.

Now he'll play for a true player's coach in Maurice Cheeks, who has had Rasheed Wallace and Allen Iverson to deal with, and he'll have a great example of professionalism in new teammate Chauncey Billups.

3. Off-season blues: The days when everything Oklahoma City touched turned to gold ... well, they seem to be over, at least if the off-season is any indication.

The Thunder, after trading franchise cornerstone James Harden just before last season, then lost his replacement, Kevin Martin, in free agency after Martin signed with Minnesota.

OKC targeted Mike Miller, who was amnestied by Miami, and early reports indicated that Miller would sign with the Thunder. Instead, he signed with another Western Conference contender, Memphis, for whom he had previously played for 5? seasons.

Instead, the Thunder signed two free agents -- point guard Derek Fisher and shooting guard Ryan Gomes. At 38, Fisher is a long way from his prime, and there's even less excitement over Gomes, who in 2010 was traded to Portland as part of a Blazers-Timberwolves deal that involved Martell Webster and Luke Babbitt, then waived five days later.

The Oklahoman's Barry Tramel's take on the Gomes signing: "Sorry, I can?t get excited about Ryan Gomes, who apparently is signing with the Thunder. Mike Miller? Absolutely. Dorrell Wright? OK. Derek Fisher? Fine.Ryan Gomes? Nope."

4. Kings ransom: Although Sacramento successfully staved off Seattle's bid to grab the Kings, and the team has new ownership, management and coaches, there's still work to be done to secure the franchise's long-term future in the city.

The city's attempt to build a new downtown arena has created a nasty fight with a group that wants the matter put to a public vote, the Sacramento Bee's Ryan Lillis reports. Arena proponents used a "robocall" system to contact 56,000 voters "extolling the virtues of a downtown arena" while also accusing opponents of lying.

Opponents of publicly financing the building -- the arena agreement calls for $258 million in public money to be spent on the proposed $448 million facility -- need 22,000 signature to put the matter to a public vote.

Yogi Berra was right: It ain't over till it's over.

5. European vocation: Former University of Oregon standout Arsalan Kazemi could spend the 2013-14 in Europe instead of playing for the 76ers, the Philadelphia Inquirer reports.

?He would get a chance to work on his game somewhere else for a year,? Philadelphia GM Sam Hinkie tells the Inquirer. ?Then [we] would have the opportunity to reassess where he is later. I think that?s an attractive opportunity for someone like him.?

Kazemi played for Philadelphia's summer league team in Orlando and averaged 4.6 points, 4.6 rebounds and 20.8 minutes and shot 75 percent from the field in five games. By most accounts, he displayed his signature energy and hustle, but at 6-foot-7, 226 pounds, he will probably have to expand his perimeter offensive repertoire to find a place in the NBA.

As a second-round draft pick, the 76ers aren't obligated to give Kazemi a guaranteed contract. If they did sign him, they could shuttle him for stretches to the NBA Development League. The 76ers have a single-team affiliation with the Delaware 76ers, which gives them control over players who are sent down.

But that would require the 76ers to sign Kazemi. If they give him a guaranteed deal, he would be paid his NBA salary for the full season, no matter if he spends most of it in Delaware. But if they give him a non-guaranteed deal then cut him, they lose his rights.

If Kazemi plays in Europe, the 76ers would not have him under contract but would retain his rights. Philadelphia is well under the salary cap for 2013-14, by as much at $18 million, so it's certainly not a luxury tax issue. But this is a franchise in serious flux, with a new GM trying to chart a path.

Note: The NBA High-5 will return Friday.

LSTN Bowerys

Contrary to what often seems like public opinion (at least to an earphone reviewer), $50 is not a lot to pay for earphones. In fact, it approaches the minimum you can spend and still get some sort of pleasure out of the investment. So the first thing I noticed about the LSTN Bowerys is that, despite being $50 (direct), they look far more expensive. Reclaimed wood is used on the earpieces, and a nylon-lined cable houses an inline remote control and microphone for mobile devices. These are not materials and features typically found on budget earphones, so the next thought is: Are these are going to sound horrible because they spent all the production cost on looks, not performance? The good news for bass lovers is that the earphones actually deliver distortion-free, powerful low-end. The bad news for everyone is that they can often sound muddy.

Design
There's nothing that looks budget or cheap about the Bowerys design. A quality, nylon-wrapped cable descends from earpieces made from reclaimed wood?a striking look that comes in three different wood types (Beach Wood, Cherry Wood, and Ebony Wood?our test unit was the Ebony.) The LSTN logo is tastefully etched into the wood, so that it doesn't really stand out?it's the wood grain you notice more than anything.

An inline remote control and microphone are situated around mouth-level along the left ear's cable. The remote is of the single-button variety, which is better than no remote at all, but it means you can only control playback, track skipping, and answer calls?there's no volume adjusting here. Call clarity through the mic is par for the course in the land of cellular fidelity. Your partner will understand you just fine, and you them, but things don't always sound crystal clear, and this has far more to do with mobile fidelity than it does the mic itself.LSTN Bowerys inline

Included with the Bowerys: three total pairs of black silicone ear tips, and a canvass draw-string carrying pouch. LSTN also donates a portion of your money to Starkey Hearing Foundation to help those with damaged hearing get hearing aides, so you can feel like you are doing a good deed by purchasing your earphones.

Performance
On tracks with tremendous sub-bass presence, like the Knife's "Silent Shout,"?the Bowerys deliver some deep low-end without any real issues. At absolute maximum volume, the earphones sound and feel as if they're flirting with distortion, but they never quite cross the threshold into real distortion?an impressive feat for a pair in this price range. Many cheaper earphone pairs will avoid distorting on deep bass tracks by avoiding reproducing deep bass frequencies altogether, but the Bowerys deliver a powerful low-frequency punch. Bass lovers will be pleased with the boosting that happens in this range, purists will not.

On Bill Callahan's "Drover," the bass boosting has a bit of a muddying effect on the mix?the drumming receives too much low-end, as do Callahan's baritone vocals. There is some high-mid sculpting that saves the guitar strumming from disappearing in a sea of low frequencies, and the vocals receive enough treble edge to more or less stay in command of the mix, but things are definitely weighted to the bass end of the spectrum in a dramatic way. In this price range, it's rare to find a pair of earphones that can deliver thunderous bass and also handle the nuances of a mix and maintain the balance, so this is not a huge surprise.

The Bowerys deliver Jay-Z and Kanye West's "No Church in the Wild" with power in the lows, but at times things lack clarity. We get the thump of the kick drum loop, albeit with less accompanying high-mid attack than we typically hear on this track. And we get sub-bass synth hits delivered with power, but not a whole lot of definition?it almost sounds as if the synth and the loop are one, whereas a clearer sound signature would define the contour of each sound more precisely. Vocals on this track manage to avoid any sort of muddiness, mainly because no one on this track has a lower-register voice like Callahan's.

Classical tracks, like John Adams' "The Chairman Dances," fare a bit better on the Bowerys in terms of overall balance. Tracks like this often naturally favor the high-mids and brighter instruments, which means they do just fine here without much extra boosting and sculpting in the higher frequencies. The bass boosting adds a subtle low-end richness to lower register strings and percussion?things don't sound too heavily-boosted since much of the low frequency boost focuses on truly deep, near sub-bass frequencies that can exist in an orchestra, but not with the abundance they are found in electronic music or modern pop and hip hop. Thus, the large drum hits at the end sound full and powerful without sounding ridiculously over-the-top, though purists will still find the bass presence here too much.

If it's a more balanced sound you seek in the price range, the NuForce NE-650M is a solid, affordable option. If you like the idea of some bass boosting, but have some more room in your budget, the Sennheiser MM 70s deliver solid low end with balanced highs. And if you're really trying to spend the least amount of money you can without buying garbage, both the RHA MA150 and the id America New Metropolitan offer decent performance for their very-low prices. But at $50, the LSTN Bowerys are a good-looking earphone with phone controls and gobs of bass. If you prefer a sound signature that favors the low-end, the Bowerys are a budget option worth considering.

Today in Washington: President Obama invites Hillary Clinton to White House lunch

Washington -- Hillary Rodham Clinton plans to return to the White House today for a private lunch with President Barack Obama in a meeting that will be closed to the press.

It will be Clinton's second meeting with Obama at the White House since she stepped down as secretary of state on Feb. 1. White House officials said Sunday the lunch will be in the president's private dining room, but offered no other details about the meeting.

The meeting follows the White House announcement Sunday that Israeli-Palestinian peace talks will resume after a stalemate that lasted for years. It was not clear if Clinton has been invited to provide advice on the issue.

Clinton is the subject of speculation about a potential campaign for the Democratic presidential nomination in 2016. News of the lunch followed an announcement by the NBC television network Saturday that it will air a miniseries on Clinton before the 2016 presidential election.

NBC said the four-hour miniseries "Hillary" will star Diane Lane as the former first lady, U.S. senator from New York and U.S. secretary of state.

Pope dons Indian headdress after Brazil speech

RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) ? Pope Francis has delighted a crowd in Rio de Janeiro by donning a colorful Indian headdress handed to him by a member of a Brazilian tribe.

It came after the pontiff spoke Saturday at Rio's Municipal Theater to an audience mostly made up of Brazil's political, business and cultural elite.

After the talk, he was greeted by well-wishers on stage, including a few Indians.

A bare-chested man named Ubirai Matos from the Pataxo tribe met the pope while wearing a reed skirt, ornate red-bead necklace and large nose and ear piercings.

Matos took off his feather headdress and handed it to the pontiff.

Francis promptly placed it on his own head and flashed the crowd a smile.
